Gangs Of Wasseypur II released in August 2012, two months after the first film that was lauded as being one of the boldest gangster films made in Hindi cinema. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the revenge drama, with the original run time of 5 hours and 20 minutes, was split into two parts to accommodate a theatrical release. Part II took forward the story of the three warring families in Wasseypur.

This film shifts focus from Manoj Bajpayee's Sardar Khan to his son, Faizal Khan played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Siddiqui's turn as the menacing boss of the coal mafia was widely appreciated. The film also introduced Huma Qureshi as Mohsina Hamid. The film's writer, Zeishan Quadri also appears in the film as Definite, Faizal's gun-toting, Tere Naam-hairstyle sporting half-brother.

Kashyap peppered Bollywood references through the film with the aid of posters, background music as well as cell phone ringtones, to signify the passage of time. The characters too are highly influenced by the movies. As the antagonist Ramadhir Singh says in the film – "Everyone has a movie running inside their heads."
