Team FC

As we ring in 2024, we are gearing up for another edge-of-the-seat, stem-winding year of films. The catalogue of big releases includes long-awaited sequels, adaptations and riveting original screenplays. From the return of an auteur, Bong Joon-ho to an animated Lord of The Rings prequel, there is much to look forward to — we hope you are as stirred as we are.

The films have been arranged alphabetically, since their India release dates are yet unavailable.

Beetlejuice 2

Following up to the 1988 film Beetlejuice, Tim Burton directs this horror comedy musical about a ghost who helps haunt houses. The film stars Jenna Ortega — along with Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara who will be returning in the sequel.

Challengers

Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist star in this romantic comedy + sports drama that promises a deliciously messy bisexual love triangle. The film follows a tennis player who has to face off against his former best friend, who also happens to be his current girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. Add the fact that Challengers is directed by Luca Guadagnino, who is known for his lush, sensual filmography, and we could not be more excited.

Deadpool 3

Director Shawn Levy brings the third instalment of the Deadpool franchise — an answer to fans’ incessant requests to get Deadpool and Wolverine together.

Dune 2

This is the second instalment in Dennis Villeneuve’s sprawling sci-fi saga, which is based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Set amidst the mystical sand dunes of Arrakis, Dune 2 takes forward Paul Atreides’s journey as he reckons with the prophecy that leaves the fate of the world in his hands. The film’s ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista and Zendaya, with the addition of stars like Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Léa Seydoux.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

A double whammy that is both a spin-off and a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke in the fifth instalment of the Mad Max franchise.

Gladiator 2

Ridley Scott has offered up the sequel to Gladiator — one of his most beloved films. Though Russell Crowe won’t be returning to reprise his iconic role, the film has a swoon worthy cast of Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and internet Zaddy, Pedro Pascal.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The Monsterverse expands with Godzilla and Kong collaborating to save the Hollow Earth and the surface. This is the sequel to the 2021  Godzilla vs. Kong.

If

Written and directed by John Krasinski, it has a stacked cast with Ryan Reynolds, Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Krasinski's wife, Emily Blunt. The film follows a girl who starts seeing the imaginary friends of other children who have been abandoned.

Inside Out 2

The sequel to the charming 2015 Pixar film — which is set in the mind of an angsty adolescent — introduces a new emotion into the mix, Anxiety, played by Maya Hawke. Riley’s other emotions, Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, must now figure out how to deal with this unwelcome arrival.

Joker: Folie à Deux

Joaquin Phoenix is back as the Joker with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in this sequel to the well received 2019 film. Todd Phillips returns to direct this film, and it is rumoured to be a musical drama.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes

Wes Ball’s sci-fi actioner is the fourth instalment of the Planet of the Apes franchise. After 300 years of the War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), this film follows the story of Proximus Caesar, Noa and Mae.

Mickey-17

Written, directed, and co-produced by Bong Joon-ho, this sci-fi film is based on a novel by Edward Ashton of the same name. The film follows Mickey 17, who is an “expendable” on a mission to colonise another world.

Madame Web

Directed by S. J. Clarkson, this fourth instalment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe stars Dakota Johnson as Madame Web, along with Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced and Tahar Rahim.

The Color Purple

Directed by Blitz Bazawule, this coming-of-age musical is based on the Alice Walker novel of the same name, and is an adaptation of The Color Purple stage musical.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

This animated prequel takes us back to Middle Earth. Set 261 years before the events of The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers (2002), the film is reported to draw inspiration from the visuals and design of Peter Jackson’s iconic film trilogy.

Bonus:

Currently there are no confirmations on the release dates of these films but we sincerely hope they get theatrical releases in India in 2024.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse

The story picks up right after Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023) with directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson furthering the super-hit franchise.

The Boy and the Heron

Writer-director Hayao Miyazaki’s semi-autobiographical fantasy tale is the story of Mahito, a young boy who navigates a world where the living co-exist with the dead. This is a Japanese film, but there is a wonderful English-dubbed version where Robert Pattison voices the heron.
