Ameer and Yuvan Shankar Raja join hands to produce Maayavalai (Tamil)

The makers of actor-director Ameer’s next film recently unveiled the first look poster of the upcoming film along with releasing its title. Titled Maayavalai, the poster sees Ameer dominating the frame while we see the silhouette of a couple on the side. The poster is designed in an illustrated style. 

The film sees Ameer and composer Yuvan Shankar Raja joining forces as producers for the first time. Shankar Raja backs the film under his banner YSR Films and also provides the music, while Ameer backs it under his Ameer Film Corporation banner. Directed by Ramesh Balakrishna of Adhu fame, Maayavalai features Ameer, Satya, Sanchita Shetty, Ashokan, Dheena and Vincent.

Chandramukhi 2 gets its first look (Tamil)

The filming for the upcoming horror film Chandramukhi 2 was recently wrapped. The makers have now released the first look poster of the Raghava Lawrence starrer while also announcing a release window. The poster sees Raghava Lawrence’s character looking through a shining light emerging from the iconic room of Chandramukhi. The team has mentioned that the film will be in theatres for Ganesh Chathurthi.

Directed by P Vasu, who also directed the original, the horror film features Raghava Lawrence, Kangana Ranaut (in her third Tamil film), Vadivelu, Radhika, Lakshmi Menon, Srushti Dange, Mahima Nambiar and Ravi Maria. It is backed by Lyca Productions while Academy Award winner MM Keeravani composes the music. RD Rajasekar handles the cinematographer while Lewellyn Gonsalvez joins as the editor. The makers have not yet revealed if the film is a direct sequel to the Rajinikanth starring Chandramukhi which was a remake of the Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu.

Mysskin debuts as a composer, releases first single (Tamil)

The makers of Devil recently released the first single from the album. Titled ‘Kalavi Paadal’, the song was released along with a lyrical video. The romantic song features the main leads Viddharth and Poorna. It is interesting to note that noted filmmaker Mysskin is debuting as a music composer with the film. ‘Kalavi Paadal’ will be his first single ever as a composer. Devu Mathew sings the song while Mysskin himself provides the lyrics.

Devil is written and directed by Aathithya, who is known for the black comedy Savarakathi. It stars Vidharth, Poorna, Thirigun and Subashree. Produced by R Radhakrishnan and S Hari under their banners Maruthi Films and H Pictures. Karthik Muthukumar and S Elaiyaraja handle the cinematography and editing respectively.

Pawan Kalyan’s Bro gets a teaser (Telugu)

The makers of the Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej starrer Bro released the teaser of the film. The teaser shows Pawan Kalyan in various looks, a prominent one being that of a coolie, as dialogues containing various references to Kalyan’s previous films are heard. He seems to be playing a God-like character. We see him in the middle of a celestial door as he confronts Sai Dharam Tej’s character Mark. The teaser then shows us various glimpses of the scenes containing the real-life uncle and nephew and their clash of ideals, in what promises to be a fun entertainer.

Bro is a remake of the Tamil film Vinodhaya Sitham, which was written and directed by Samuthirakani, who returns for the remake. Ace director Trivikram Srinivas wrote the screenplay and dialogues for the film. The film is backed by TG Viswa Prasad under his People Media Factory banner along with Zee Studios. Thaman scores the music while Naveen Nooli and Sujith Vasudev handle the editing and cinematography respectively. The film is all set to release on July 28.

First look of Captain Miller is out (Tamil)

Dhanush, who was last seen in Venky Atluri’s bilingual Vaathi, will be starring in Arun Matheswaran’s period-action film Captain Miller. The makers of the film unveiled the first look poster of the film, where we see Dhanush standing on an open ground surrounded by dead soldiers. Bloodied and covered in ashes, Dhanush sports a man-bun while holding a gun in a setting which seems to be that of the aftermath of a battle.

Captain Miller is written and directed by Arun Matheswaran of Rocky and Saani Kayidham fame. Backed by Satya Jyothi Films, the action film is said to be set in the pre-Independence era. Along with Dhanush, the film stars Dr. Shivarajkumar, Priyanka Mohan, Sundeep Kishan, Nivedithaa Sathish, Nassar, John Kokken and Edward Sonnenblick. GV Prakash Kumar composes music for the film while Sidhartha Nuni and Nangooran Ramachandran serve as the cinematographer and editor of the film.

Pawan Kalyan’s OG wraps 50% of its shooting (Telugu)

The makers of Pawan Kalyan’s action entertainer OG have announced that the team has completed its third production schedule. Taking to their social media handle, “Action, epicness and drama…A very productive three Schedules Done & Dusted. #OG Completes 50% of the shoot. Exciting weeks ahead” said the tweet by DVV Entertainment, the production house which is producing the film.

Directed by Sujeeth of Saaho fame, OG is positioned to be an action entertainer with a strong Japanese flavour. Backed by DVV Danayya, the film also stars Priyanka Mohan, Sriya Reddy, Emraan Hashmi, Prakash Raj and Arjun Das. S Thaman scores the music while Ravi K Chandran serves as the cinematographer.

Voices behind Pushpa and RX 100 unite among other creators for The Sourrce (Telugu)

Ajay Bhupathi, the director of RX 100 and Hussain Sha Kiran, who is known for his contributions as a writer for Pushpa: The Rise and Nanakku Prematho have joined The Sourrce, a collective of creative minds set to tell engaging and extraordinary stories from India. Founded by Shikha Kapur, The Sourrce emerged from a 12-person writer’s room consisting of some of the most creative writers in the industry who are committed to tell engaging stories that span genres. 

The collective includes writers as well as directors, producers and executives who have been part of multiple web series as well as international productions. Other members of the collective include Milind Rau of Aval fame, Prem Mistry, the ex-director of The Viral Fever (TVF) and creator of series such as TVF Immature and Campus Diaries, Priyanka Ghose, a co-director of the Indian adaptation of The Night Manager and Rahi Anil Barve of Tumbbad fame, among others.

Kamal Haasan joins Prabhas’s Project K (Telugu)

The cast of Nag Ashwin’s magnum opus Project K seems to get bigger by the day. The sci-fi film already stars big-wigs such as Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani. The team has now onboarded Kamal Haasan into the cast. While the news made rounds earlier that he was approached to play the role of an antagonist, the makers officially confirmed his inclusion with a special promo video which featured a montage of some of the actor’s prominent roles. The actor also confirmed the news, penning an appreciation note for the makers.

Project K is written and directed by Nag Ashwin of Mahanati fame. It is backed by C Ashwini Dutt under the Vyjayanthi Films banner. Dani Sacnhez-Lopez handles the cinematography while Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao handles the editing. Santhosh Narayanan composes the music.

Danish Sait and Naveen Shankar to headline Kirik Et 11 (Kannada)

Karthik Gowda, the creative producer behind industry hits such as KGF, Kantara and Yuvaratna recently announced the next project from his production house KRG Studios. The film, Kirik Et 11 will be featuring Naveen Shankar and Danish Sait in the lead roles and will be a cricket based sports comedy. It is being directed by Suman Kumar, who is a co-writer on the series Farzi and The Family Man. This will be his second directorial after Raghu Thatha, a Tamil film starring Keerthy Suresh which is currently in production.

Kirik Et 11 will be presented by Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale Films and is produced by Karthik Gowda, Yogi G Raj and Vijay Subramaniam. It is written by Manoj Kumar Kalaivanan, with Vasuki Vaibhav composing the music. The rest of the cast and crew details are yet to be revealed. Kirik Et 11 will be the fourth production from KRG Studios after Rathnan Prapancha, Gurudev Hoysala and Uttarakanda. Filming is expected to begin in October, coinciding with the start of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Malavika Nair debuts in Kannada with Ganesh-Srinivas Raju project (Kannada)

Actor Ganesh, known for Mungaru Male and Gaalipata is all set to collaborate with director Srinivas Raju of Dandupalya fame. This collaboration has been a subject of intrigue as it sees a departure for the actor who is known for his romantic comedies. While the details of the project have been kept under wraps, the makers have now announced that actor Malavika Nair will be starring along with Ganesh. Known for her roles in Ustad Hotel, Yevade Subramaniam and Taxiwala, Malavika will be making her debut in the Kannada film industry. Filming for the project is said to be in progress with Ganesh and Sadhu Kokila while the rest of the cast and crew are yet to be revealed.

Kichcha Sudeep launches his nephew Sanchith Sanjeev’s debut feature Jimmy (Kannada)

Sanchith Sanjeev, the nephew of ace actor Kichcha Sudeepa is all set to make his debut as an actor and director with Jimmy. The film was launched recently in a star-studded event where the makers also released the title teaser of the film. The teaser shows Sanchith as the titular Jimmy who walks into an alley where two of his henchmen are beating up a fellow gang member. The teaser hints at the film being a crime thriller, with Sanchith playing a gangster. The teaser also features a song composed by Vasuki Vaibhav and featuring the vocals of Sanvi Sudeep, Kichcha Sudeep’s daughter, who also writes the lyrics for the song.

The teaser was launched by Sudeep in an event which also saw celebrities such as Shivarajkumar, Upendra, Ravichandran and R Chandru in attendance. Backed by G Manoharan, Priya Sudeep and K P Sreekanth under Venus Entertainers, Lahari Films and Supriyanvi Picture Studio banners, the technical crew consists of AJ Shetty as the cinematographer, Vijay Raj BG as the editor and Vasuki Vaibhav as the music composer.

Upendra to star as Kanakadasa in a biopic helmed by Naganna (Kannada)

Actor-director Upendra is all set to reunite with director Naganna in a biopic centred around the historic philosopher Kanakadasa. The director and actor will be collaborating for the fifth time after previously successful ventures such as Gokarna, Kutumba, Gowramma and Dubai Babu. The director, known for blockbusters such as Kotigobba and Vishnu Sena, has recently been branching into historic territory with the films Krantveera Sangolli Rayanna and Kurukshetra.

The biopic will be produced by BG Manjunath and has legendary composer Hamsalekha on board. Filming is set to begin after Upendra completes his directorial UI. Details regarding the rest of the cast and crew are yet to be revealed. Interestingly, the life of Kanakadasa has already had a cinematic adaptation back in 1960, with Dr.Rajkumar’s Bhaktha Kanakadasa. 

Raj B Shetty’s Toby gets a first look poster (Kannada)

The makers of Raj B Shetty’s next crime drama Toby released the actor’s first look motion poster. The promotion material released until now have hinted at the actor playing a violent character, akin to Shiva in his previous directorial Garuda Gamuna Vrishabha Vahana.

Toby is written by Raj B Shetty and is directed by Basil Alchakkal. Lighter Buddha Films handles the production of the film along with Agastya Films, a venture by producer Ravi Raj Kalasa. Praveen Shriyan and Midhun Mukundan serve as the cinematographer and music composer. Raj B Shetty stars as the titular Toby while Samyuktha Hornad, Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Chaithra J Achar and Raj Deepak Shetty play other characters. The film is all set to release on August 25.

Dulquer Salman’s King of Kotha gets a teaser (Malayalam)

The makers of the Dulquer Salman starrer King of Kotha released the teaser for the film. It sees Salman playing a gangster who rules the area of Kotha, driving around in vintage cars with swagger. Be it festivals or fights, the teaser burns with flames and yellow colours, setting us up for a vintage mass rural ride. The film is slated to hit the screens in August 2023 and will be released in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi.

Directed by Abhilash Joshiy, the film co-stars Dancing Rose Shabeer, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prasanna, Nyla Usha, Chemban Vinod and Gokul Suresh. While the film has music by Jakes Bejoy, Shyam Sasidharan has handled the editing and Nimish Ravi has lensed the film.

Biju Menon’s next gets a title (Malayalam)

Actor Biju Menon is all set to star in debutant director Royas Shareef’s film. The makers recently unveiled the title poster of the film. Titled Thandu, the film is backed by Ashiq Usman, known for producing Thallumala and Ayalvaashi, along with Jimshi Khalid under the Ashiq Usman Productions banner. Co-written by Shareef and Kannappan, the film’s technical crew consists of Khalid as the cinematographer, Nabu Usman as the editor and Vishnu Vijay as the music director. Details about the plot and the rest of the cast and crew are yet to be revealed.

RDX teaser released (Malayalam)

On the occasion of Bakrid, the makers of the action entertainer RDX released the teaser of the film. Set in Cochin, the teaser introduces us to the titular characters namely, Robert (Shane Nigam), Dony (Anthony Verghese) and Xavier (Neeraj Madhav). We see them in a brawl as they gang up on their opponents. The setting seems to be a gang war centred around the Cochin Carnival.

RDX is written and directed by Nahas Hidhayath and is backed by Sophia Paul of Weekend Blockbusters banner, the production behind Minnal Murali and Bangalore Days. The film also stars Mahima Nambiar, Aima Rosmy Sebastian Lal, Maala Parvathi and Babu Antony. Anbariv, the stunt coordinators behind Vikram and the KGF series will be handling the action sequences while Sam CS composes the music. Alex J Pulickal and Chaman Chacko serve as the cinematographer and editor respectively. The makers aim to release the film for Onam.

Renowned makeup artist Pandian celebrates 50 years in the industry (Malayalam)

Renowned makeup artist Pandian, who is known for working with legendary actors such as Prem Naseer, Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, NT Rama Rao and most recently with Fahadh Faasil has completed an illustrious 50 years in the industry. Pandian began his career in the industry at the age of 16 as an assistant to Krishnarajan, the makeup artist of actor Sathyan. After donning many caps in the industry, he worked as a makeup assistant to MO Devasia and worked across the Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada film industry. He started as an independent makeup artist with J Williams’ Madalasa and became a household name in the Malayalam industry, being a go-to for directors such as Kamal, Joshiy, Sathyan and Anthikkad.

The artist recently celebrated this momentous occasion on the sets of Vivekanandan Viralaru, a film directed by Kamal, a frequent collaborator of Pandian. The veteran artist is currently working on the film which co-stars Shine Tom Chacko, Manju Pillai, Johny Antony, Swastika Vijay, Maala Parvathi among others. The film is backed by Nediyath Naseeb and PS Shelly Raj under the banner of Nediyath Productions, with Prakash Velayudhan serving as the cinematographer, Bijjibal composing the music and Ranjan Pramod serving as the editor. The cast and crew celebrated Pandian’s 50 year run in the industry in a felicitation ceremony.
