Akansha Rukhaiyar

Garfield graced the screen way back in the Seventies. Still, the fact that The Garfield Movie is coming out next month has generated endless excitement. Chris Pratt voicing our beloved orange cat and the impressive animations will be invigorating.

That’s the thing about animated movies; they are full of mystical joy, wonder, and vibrant visuals that will capture the attention of adults who have a thousand things on their plate and kids who constantly need visual stimulation.

So when you are not in the best of moods and want to heal your inner child, or if you need suggestions for the next kids’ movie night, give these five animated movies on Amazon Prime Video a shot:

The Road to El Dorado (2000)

El Dorado is the ‘City of Gold’, and if you had a map taking you to this mystical city, wouldn’t you go?

That’s what Tulio (voiced by Kevin Kline) and Miguel (voiced by Kenneth Branagh) did when they won the map. But the journey is not easy, and they are declared enslaved people. As they somehow find their way to El Dorado, they are confronted with some moral decisions, although they have many fun adventures. They also make a new friend, Chel (Rosie Perez), and its hard not to fall in love with their bond.

This movie is vibrant and aesthetically pleasing. The voice acting is impressive. Over ten songs by powerhouses like Elton John and Hans Zimmer will have you humming along.

Rango (2011)

As a child, I always wondered what adventures my dog would go on if he was on an adventure. My imagination never stretched far enough to think he could become a sheriff.

After watching this movie, who knows?

A pet chameleon (voiced by Johnny Depp) gets separated from his family. After a combination of mishaps, he finds himself with a new name — Rango — as the new sheriff of a mystical town named ‘Dirt.’

The characters are well fleshed out. Their features are animated with such precision that you will feel like you are a part of their world. One reason is that Roger Deakins, the man behind the visuals for How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and Wall-E (2008), was a consultant on this film.

Johnny Depp does justice as a chameleon; his antics are a joy to watch.

Song of the Sea (2014)

This animated fantasy film is about Conor (voiced by Brendan Gleeson), a lighthouse keeper who lives with his family. His wife, Bronagh (voiced by Lisa Hannigan), disappears after giving birth to Saoirse (voiced by Lucy O’Connell), leaving Conor to raise their children, Saoirse and Ben (voiced by David Rawle).

Saoirse is mute, and magical beings abduct her. As they reunite with Saoirse, the family goes on a series of adventures that are so beautifully crafted that they will take your breath away. Each character has a strong arc, and you root for all of them.

The animation will remind you of Studio Ghibli, and the heartwarming storyline will leave you with happy tears by the end.

Big Hero 6 (2014)

Illegal robot fights, teleportation experiments, freak fires, robots doing martial arts, superheroes – a recipe for disaster and a cinematic masterpiece all at once. Big Hero 6 is an animated film about Hiro Harmada (voiced by Ryan Potter), a young robotics savant who uses his expertise to duel in robot fights.

In a bid to get him on the right track, his brother Tadashi (voiced by Daniel Henney) introduces Hiro to Baymax (voiced by Scott Adsit), a robot made for healthcare assistance. After Tadashi dies in a fire, Hiro and Baymax come together to get to the bottom of the “fire accident.”

The graphics of this Disney-animated movie are brilliant. Hiro’s journey is commendable – he grieves his brother’s death and then becomes resilient in his quest to uncover the truth with Tadashi’s friends. His transformation arc will make you proud of him, especially if you have a little brother. And, of course, after watching the movie, you will wish you had your own Baymax to chill with.

The Secret Life of Pets (2016)

If you have had a pet before, you know the chaos that ensues when you bring in a second one. Max (voiced by Louis C.K.), the terrier, was not happy either when his pet parent, Katie (voiced by Ellie Kemper), brought in Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet), a stray dog. But when things go wrong, Duke and Max are forced to be there for each other in more ways than one, and their bond grows into something special.

This is one of the best-animated movies on Amazon Prime Video because it has a brilliant cast of voice actors.

Who wouldn’t want to hear Kevin Hart as a scary rabbit named Snowball, for example? As the film traces the adventures of dogs, cats, and everything in between, you will appreciate the high-level animation, the performances, and, of course, the adorable pets themselves.
