Disney+ Hotstar has added a slew of new movies for you to choose from. In May, the streaming platform released several titles that contribute diverse narratives, informative takes, and emotional upheaval for a wide range of audiences.

From two documentaries about iconic bands, a love story with a metaphysical element, and a Malayalam survival thriller, the list is diverse. So whether you are looking for a fun night with your musically inclined friends or just a comfy thriller vibe, watch these new movies on Disney+ Hotstar this weekend.

Let it Be (1970)

This new movie on Disney+ Hotstar is a re-release of this 1970 film. The original was directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, which has been restored by Peter Jackson. If you want a real-life version of the warring egos, clashing personalities, and high-level musical abilities at play in films like Rock On (2008), this is the film to watch.

Of course, if you are a Beatles fan, this film will open your eyes to the artistic processes behind recording the “Let It Be” album.

Rock documentaries like Let It Be will always be a must-watch, not just because of the nostalgia quotient but also because they show the ‘breakup’ that caused the heartbreak among millions of fans.

All of Us Strangers (2023)

This new movie on Disney+ Hotstar presents a refreshing story about Adam (Andrew Scott), a screenwriter who is having trouble finishing a script that delves into childhood trauma. When he eventually discovers that his parents are well and unalive through a metaphysical chain of events, he wonders if he can reconcile with his traumatic past.

On the other hand, his blossoming romance with Harry (Paul Mescal) will cut through the tension Adam is undergoing.

The score and intricate inclusion of sound, the supernatural elements grounded within a story about love and growth, and a heartwrenching portrayal of Adam’s life as it was and as it could have been will leave you sobbing well after the end of the film.

Kalvan (2024)

This Tamil survival thriller is about the fate of an elephant when a group of friends are looking for a reward through easy means. At the centre is Kemban (G.V. Prakash Kumar), who needs this money to land a job as a forest area supervisor to prevent poaching.

The irony of his wanting to capture an elephant to become an anti-poaching officer makes up the crux of the story. This new movie on Disney+ Hotstar has adventure, wit, and decent acting. The themes are gratitude and sacrifice, so if you watch this film, prepare for some heavy messaging.

The Beach Boys (2024)

Drawing on archival footage and combining it with fresh interviews and snippets, this documentary on The Beach Boys, a famous band in the Sixties, goes over the six-decade-long history of the band with its members. This band has ranked over 50 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and have become the defining musical vibe for Southern California visuals.

The film dives into what kind of music they intended to create when they started the band, their dynamic with each other, the ebb and flow of their discography, and how their band came together because they loved to sing together when they were young.

This new movie on Amazon Prime Video is not just about their musical journey or band-related conflict; it also discusses the band members' mental health struggles and other personal issues.

It briefly touches upon the perceived competitive nature between The Beach Boys and The Beatles in the pop music space.

The director of this documentary, Frank Marshall, has also directed other music documentaries, such as The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (2020) and Just Call Out My Name (2022). Hence, his treatment of The Beach Boys not only evoked nostalgia but also gave us critical insight into the band and individual members.

Manjummel Boys (2024)

Malayalam survival thrillers constitute a genre that has swept the masses off their feet.

Based on an actual incident, this film is a Malayalam survival thriller about a gang of boys from Manjummel who are on a rescue mission. One of the ten friends has fallen into a ravine in Kodaikanal during a trip.

Though Manjummel Boys has a seemingly simple storyline, and the crux is the oft-explored male friendships and eternal bonds, the compelling interlacing of these themes along with storytelling principles like Chekhov’s Gun, with emotion, action, drama, and comedy makes it engaging from beginning to end. If you zoom in on the finer details of this film, you will notice that seemingly disconnected scenes will interlace to create a cohesive and engaging narrative.

As the film progresses, the emotions you feel will feel elevated due to the diversity in camera angles and the overall cinematography.
