The sequel to filmmaker Gautham Menon's 2010 film Vinnaithandi Varuvaya is on course. During our recent interview with Menon, the filmmaker revealed interesting details about the film, including cast changes, how the story progresses, and the music.
1) Simbu will not be a part of the sequel. The new cast includes R Madhavan, Tovino Thomas and Puneeth Rajkumar. About Simbhu not reprising his role, director Gautham Menon said, "It is a little bothering. I think all these actors want to do solo films. This is a story with four heroes… But I'm really happy Maddy has agreed to play Simbu's role."
2) The sequel is about Karthik and his best friends from college. They are from Bangalore, Trivandrum and Hyderabad. "Each of the heroes will get a version of their own. Like Puneeth Rajkumar will have a Kannada version because the first ten minutes of the film will be in Kannada and when they meet, his interaction with somebody will be in Kannada. The Malayalam boy's voice over will run over the entire film, so its a Malayalam film essentially also," said Menon.
3) The sequel will take the story forward by 8 years. Karthik is now a hot shot filmmaker who's made four movies. His friends have nothing to do with films. "One guy owns a couple of restaurants, the other guy is a car dealership owner, the fourth is an IT boy from Kerala. They decide to travel together, taking a break from their work, for the fifth friend's wedding. But the film is not Hangover. It's an emotion-filled journey," says Menon.
4) The good news is that A R Rahman is on board to score music for the sequel.
