Hot Take: Sonam Kapoor wears the pants and calls all the right shots. Sonam and Rhea Kapoor choose Ralph & Russo for the actor's umpteenth red carpet appearance at Cannes.
There's no denying that Kapoors share a special connection with designers Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo. Sonam even closed the designer duo's Fall 2018 Couture show, dressed in champagne-coloured Chantilly lace bridal gown, decked in Swarovski crystals. The designers even attended her star-studded wedding.
The coming together of R&R and the Kapoors at Cannes is becoming something of a festival tradition. Last evening, Sonam gave us much needed reprieve from clouds of tulle, with her tuxedo dress. A custom Ralph & Russo creation, worn with an equally phenomenal (see what we did there?) set of jewels from Chopard.
In 2018, soon after Sonam's wedding, the duo created a lehenga-like outfit. Sonam wore it with aplomb, teaming it with an embellished braid – the mehendi on her hands still fresh, and working with the outfit!

The year 2017 was the only aberration, where Sonam wore Elie Saab, so we'll gloss right over this.
Back in 2016, we saw Sonam sport a slew of custom-made Ralph & Russo numbers. The cold shoulder asymmetric gown, with a cape and train framing the sides made her look every bit statuesque.
There was also this noir dress, she saved for an after-party.
Oh, and there was this caped perfection, studded with dainty rosettes, that very year.
In 2015, Sonam wore a cerulean blue draped gown by the duo, which sculpted her frame perfectly.
It's just a litany of flawless looks. (And we haven't even looked at the countless other red carpet moments where they worked their magic!) Here's hoping this partnership goes from strength to strength.

Hot Take: Seeing Red and spotting (fashion) gold! Sonam Kapoor aces her first day at Cannes.
Cannes just happens to be Sonam Kapoor's favourite fashion playground. This year, she stepped out in a custom-made Maison Valentino dress – in a signature colour, 'Valentino Red' – picked by none other than her sister and stylist Rhea Kapoor.
Valentino's creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, believes that clothes have narrative power. That they speak for the designer and the wearer. It marked a great start for Sonam, who looked divine in his billowy, tiered number!
Sonam's next change (for press interviews) was an equally elegant Elie Saab. Which might have been a great choice for the red carpet? Then again, maybe she's got more surprises under her sleeve.

In a final twist, she chose Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla couture for a party. The maximalist duo's attention to detail and embroidery speak for them. This piece was a fine example of their craft too. (The pointlessly 'vintage' photos on Sonam's feed don't do it justice. Turn to videos on her Instagram story.) Minus the wrist bands and the power shoulder (supported by a loofah?), we'd have loved it more.
