Disney + Hotstar showed its intent of entering the Tamil streaming space in a big way by announcing four big series and one movie that will release in the following months, starting this Deepavali.

In a web conference attended by names such as Venkat Prabhu, Karthik Subbaraj, Sathyaraj, Kajal Aggarwal, Tamannah Bhatia, Jai, RJ Balaji, Vani Bhojan and Seetha, apart from Disney executive Sunil Rayan, the OTT major gave us an idea of its lineup, which showed both a variety of content, apart from a list of big actors and directors getting into the platform.

Mookuthi Amman, starring Nayanthara and RJ Balaji, will be the first to release, after which the other four series will follow. Here are the details.

Series: Live Telecast

Genre: Horror

Directed by Venkat Prabhu, this series stars Kajal Aggarwal, VP-regular Vaibhav and Kayal Anandhi. The director calls it his first step into the pure horror genre and from the teaser, it looks the events that follow a film crew when they enter a haunted mansion. Venkat Prabhu also described the series as a 'B and C centre' series, meant also for people who live outside of the cities. It is his second project with Kajal Aggarwal after Karthi's Biriyani.

 Series: My Perfect Husband

Genre: Family Drama/Comedy

The poster of My Perfect Husband too was launched and it stars actors Sathyaraj and Seetha, apart from Big Boss participant Aajeedh Khalique. Said to be a light family drama, the actor described it as being about a "perfectly, imperfect husband" and his family.

Series: Triples

Genre: Rom-Com

Produced by Karthik Subbaraj's Stonebench Productions, this comedy series is said to be in the mould of a Crazy Mohan comedy, the Petta director said. It stars Jai, Vivek Prasanna and Vani Bhojan, and the teaser promises a lot of word play, romance and comic relief during stressful times.

Series: November Story

Genre: Thriller

Tamannah too announced her first entry into the web series space with a promising thriller project titled 'November Story'. In the conference, she said the series was about a father (a crime novelist) and his daughter. With gory visuals and lots of intrigue, this series, directed by first timer Indira Subramaniam, also stars performers like Pasupathy.

Movie: Mookuthi Amman

Genre: Drama

And as some had predicted, the big news that came up during the announcement was the launch of Nayanthara-RJ Balaji-starrer Mookuthi Amman, making it one of the biggest films to go directly onto OTT in Tamil.

On the call, RJ Balaji described the film as a "Saami Padam" like the kind headlined by stars like Ramya Krishnan and Bhanupriya in the 90's, but with a modern update. With 'Lady Superstar' Nayanthara playing the titular role, he went on to call it a socially-responsible film that was almost complete before the lockdown happened.

This will also be Disney Hotstar's big release for the Tamil audience this Deepavali. All other series will follow this.

Answering a question, the Disney executive said that a similar lineup would be ready for the other South Indian languages as well.

Both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video had announced their respective Tamil anthologies and Disney plus Hotstar is ready to drop their Laxmmi Bomb soon. Amazon Prime Video has made yet another announcement about releasing 9 movies (Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam) over the next 3 months.

Two weeks ago, Amazon Prime Video too had made a splash when it announced 9 new films apart from the release date of films like Coolie No.1, Soorarai Pottru and Maara.
