Despite low pre-release buzz and mixed reviews, the actor's massive star power, loyal fan base and increasing patronage from the family audience are to thank for the collections

The Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions of Superstar Rajinikanth's latest release, Kaala, opened in theaters worldwide on June 7. The film met with mixed reviews from not only critics, but audiences too. Even the pre-release buzz surrounding it was low, compared to earlier Rajini starrers such as Kabali.

Despite this, Kaala has grossed more than Rs. 100 crores worldwide in just four days, on the back of the Superstar's massive star power, loyal fan base and increasing patronage from the family audience.

Domestic collections

The film has reportedly grossed 36 CR in Tamil Nadu, with collections in Chennai being described as 'outstanding'. Over four days, the city's gross is a record-breaking 6.64 CR (1.76 CR on Thursday, 1.44 CR on Friday, 1.7 CR on Saturday and 1.74 CR on Sunday). Chennai and its surrounding multiplexes – like Mayajaal, Rohini and Vettri, which fall in the Chengalpet territory – are where the film has performed best in the state. Trade experts however say that the response from other Southern territories in TN could have been much better.

In Karnataka, Kaala has grossed close to 8 CR in four days. Political issues and protests surrounding the film cost it a large sum as it had a limited first-day release. Kabali had a record-breaking opening day (grossing more than 10 CR) in Karnataka, which Kaala unfortunately missed out on.

Grossing close to 5 CR in 4 days in Kerala, the film's opening did not live up to expectations. The response for the Telugu and Hindi-dubbed versions has also been muted. From Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Kaala has grossed close to 12 CR, with a share of 6.5 CR, after the opening 4 days.

Overseas performance

Kaala has grossed more than US$1.6 million (close to 11 CR) in the USA after 4 days (including Wednesday's premieres), making it the third-highest Kollywood grosser ever in America, after Kabali and Enthiran, both Rajini starrers.

In Australia, Kaala has grossed A$4,02,213 (2.06 CR) in 4 days, coming in second after Padmaavat, in terms of opening weekend collections for Indian films released this year.

The film has also performed well in traditional Rajini strongholds like Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

In UAE and the GCC, Kaala's gross numbers for the first three days are 6.82 CR (4.81 CR in the UAE and 2.01 CR in the GCC)

The coming week is expected to be crucial as it will tell us whether the film manages to sustain its momentum. This Eid weekend will see a slew of noteworthy releases, with Race 3 in Hindi, Goli Soda 2 in Tamil, Naa Nuvve and Sammohanam in Telugu and My Story and Abrahaminte Sandhathikal in Malayalam. All of these will give Rajini's film a lot of competition as it enters its second week.
