When Petta's teaser was launched on the Superstar's birthday, it left little doubt in the mind of the viewer of how the film would be a tribute to Rajinikanth and his stardom.
And with the 149-second trailer, which dropped earlier today, Karthik Subbaraj proves yet again the perks of a fanboy-turned-director making a Rajini film. This is evident right from the low angle shot with which we're shown Rajinikanth push open the gates of a dilapidated building…a hat tip to the star's first ever intro in Aboorva Raagangal.
Sunglasses are twirled and so is a pistol in inimitable Rajni style. And when a young lady looks at the man and says, "You look so young and stylish", the Superstar's reply echoes our thoughts as he says, "Stylish?…naturally".
It's lovely to see a relaxed and smiling Rajini even as he delivers one great punch dialogue after another…the opposite of the brooding, angry young men that stand opposing him with characters played by Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
A shy and romantic Rajini, in what's expected to be a mature love story with Simran, is yet another highlight from the trailer.
The action, including a shot of flaming ember and a shootout adds oodles to the excitement. And what's more, the film also promises Rajini in true 'Madurai Gethu' as we see him shake a leg to Anirudh's koothu beats.
Petta's director Karthik Subbaraj, in an interview to Film Companion, had said the film would have enough to satisfy both Rajinikanth's and the director's own fans.
Subbaraj, a legit 'Thalaivar Veriyan', has named the actor's character Kaali in Petta after his personal favourite role from J Mahendran's Mullum Malarum.
Mahendran is said to play a role in Petta as well. The film's cast in nothing less than a powerhouse of talent with Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Trisha, Simran, M Sasikumar, Bobby Simha, Yogi Babu and Munishkanth in it.
The songs by Anirudh, is already a massive success, with its tracks 'Marana Mass' and 'Petta Paraak' garnering millions of views on Youtube within days. Lyrics are written by Vivek, Ku. Karthik, Dhanush and Karthik Subbaraj himself.
Locations of the film's shoot included Varanasi, Darjeeling, Mussoorie and Lucknow.
Petta, produced by Sun Pictures, will release on January 10 when it is expected to take on Ajith's Viswasam.
