Santhosh Jayakumar’s Ghajinikanth: What Works, What Doesn’t

After leaving his mark with two adult comedies Hara Hara Mahadevaki and Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuthu, controversial director Santhosh P Jayakumar has made a family entertainer this time. Ghajinikanth is the official remake of the Nani-starrer Bhale Bhale Magidivoy, with Arya taking on the lead role. Sayyeshaa gets yet another release soon after Kadai Kutty Singam and Junga.

Plot:  Arya plays Rajini, a young man suffering from severe memory loss. He falls in love with Vandhana (Sayyeshaa) but because of this handicap, he goes through an ordeal while trying to ask her father for her hand in marriage.

What Works

• It's interesting to see actors like Naren and Sampath utilised in a different way by the director. Naren goes all-out in a sequence in the second half which will bring the roof down. In-form comedian Sathish makes you laugh out loud in his scenes with Arya.
• Director Santhosh has delivered a faithful remake of BBM, which caters to the youngsters and the family audience. It's a breakthrough attempt for the director who has previously made sex comedies.
• The lead pair, Arya and Sayyeshaa, look good together and their so-called 'chemistry' clicks. 'Aryane' and 'Holala' are impressive songs.

What Doesn't

• The 'wow moments' in the movie are too few and far between. It's a lightweight fare with a few laughs here and there.
• Whenever the film strays into action or drama or melodrama, it doesn't click.
• The memory loss angle is overcooked and so the comedy doesn't always hit the right notes.
