Cannes 2024: Smita Patil’s Manthan Re-Releasing in Theatres on this date

Filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur shared in an exclusive chat with Film Companion at Cannes along with Naseeruddin Shah

Smita Patil starrer iconic film Manthan which released in 1976 directed by Shyam Benegal has been screened at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. A restored version of the film was screened for the people and will also be released in theatres on June 1 and June 2, 2024.

The film is set to release in almost 45 to 50 cities in India in several multiplexes including PVR, Inox and Cinepolis.

While talking to Anupama Chopra at Cannes Film Festival, filmmaker and producer Shivendra Singh Dungarpur along with Naseeruddin Shah spoke about the legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal and the iconic actress Smita Patil, Dungarpur also announced the release of Manthan in cinemas.

“We are going to release Manthan. It's going to be releasing on 1st and 2nd June in almost 45 to 50 cities all through PVR, Inox and Cinepolis everywhere we can get this film out there and then there is a big plan to show it to the villagers.”

Manthan was crowdfunded by 500,000 farmers of Gujarat who donated Rs.2 each to produce the film. It is the first crowdfunded Indian film starring Girish Karnad, Mohan Agashe, Anant Nag, Amrish Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda along with Patil and Shah.
