Sushmita Sen shared the teaser of her upcoming web series Taali on her social media page. Taali is based on the real-life struggles and courage of transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant who fought a legal battle for the recognition of the third gender in India.
The teaser opens with Sen donning a big red bindi before giving us glimpses of Sawant’s journey from a youngster in a college to a well-recognised social activist who fought for the dignity and legal rights of the third gender.
The series is directed by National Award-winning director Ravi Jadhav, written by Kshitij Patwardhan and produced by Arjun Singgh Baran, Kartk D Nishandar (GSEAMS Production) and Afeefa Nadiadwala.
Sawant founded the NGO Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust in 2000. The organisation provides counselling for the transgender community and promotes safe sex. In 2014, Sawant filed a petition to fight for the right of transgender people to adopt. She was a petitioner in a landmark National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) case where the Supreme Court recognised the transgender community as the third gender and declared that all the fundamental rights granted by the Constitution of India will apply to them as well.
