In Lucknow Central, Farhan Akhtar plays Kishan Mohan Girhotra, a small-town man with dreams of becoming a singer. Instead, he finds himself facing life imprisonment in Lucknow Central Jail for a high-profile murder. In his directorial debut, Ranjit Tiwari has a strong supporting cast including Ronit Roy, Deepak Dobriyal, Gippy Grewal and Rajesh Sharma. Bhojpuri superstars, Ravi Kishan and Manoj Tiwari also have cameos in the film.

Inspired by true events, Lucknow Central traces the escape plan of five inmates by forming a band. Diana Penty, who made her debut in Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan-starrer, Cocktail (2009), plays Gayatri Kashyap, an NGO activist helping Kishan (Farhan Akhtar) and his fellow inmates form the band. With music by Arjunna Harjaie, Rochak Kohli and Tanishk Bagchi, the film's gripping trailer has sparked interest in the fate of the prisoners.

Produced by Nikhil Advani's Emmay Entertainment, the film's plot bears stark similarities with Yash Raj Films' Qaidi Band, starring debutants Aadar Jain and Anya Singh, directed by Habib Faisal. The trailer of Qaidi Band also shows how a group of prisoners formulate an escape from prison in the guise of a musical performance.
