Kurup, starring Dulquer Salmaan, is awaited both for the film and also for the retelling of still-fugitive Sukumara Kurup's escapades.
The trailer begins with a shot of a car burning on a field, bonnet in the ground. You wonder where the owner is, why it is burning, why on this field… questions that aren't answered by the trailer, just like the ones about Kurup.
A voiceover introduces Kurup to us. Another one (Indrajith Sukumaran's) tells more about police efforts to nab Kurup. Thirty six years, over 300 tip-offs, a thousand journeys, it says, and yet Kurup remains elusive. It appears like people don't cooperate with the police: an old man refuses to identify Kurup. He might not be unpopular with the people as he is with the cops.
We only get a quick shot of Dulquer Salmaan's Kurup, dressed more like a start-up founder from Europe than a criminal from Kerala. He tells us his name, just as the rousing score trails in the end, that too in James Bond-style: Kurup, Sukumara Kurup.
Kurup is directed by Srinath Rajendran and produced by Dulquer Salmaan. It also stars Indrajith Sukumaran, Shine Tom Chacko, Sobhita Dhulipala and Manoj Bajpayee. The film is set to release in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. It was initially supposed to release in May 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic.
