Based on the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy that was a serious look at the gaps and galls of the surrogacy laws in India, Mimi infuses the drama with humour. Set in a town in Rajasthan (probably Bikaner, given the lyrics 'Bikaneri Chhori'), Kriti Sanon plays a dance performer who is asked by a foreigner couple to be their surrogate. She's paid 20 lakhs but the couple develop cold feet and leave. (In the original it is because the child will probably be born with a disability)
The trailer outlines the dramatic beats of the story — how she hides the pregnancy from her parents, how she has to confront them, and later, comfort them. Pankaj Tripathi who plays the driver who introduces her to the couple is now mistaken to be the father.
Also starring Evelyn Edwards, Sai Tamhankar, Aidan Whytock, Supriya Pathak, Manoj Pahwa, the film has music composed by AR Rahman. Written by Laxman Utekar and Rohan Shankar, directed by Utekar (Luka Chuppi), and produced by Dinesh Vijan, the film releases on Netflix and JioCinema on July 30th.
