Amazon Studios has released the trailer of Ritesh Batra's latest – Photograph. Batra, arguably one of our most successful crossover filmmakers, returns to India for a story of two strangers coming together under unlikely circumstances, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra. Batra shot to fame after the adored The Lunchbox, following which he was lapped up in the West to make The Sense Of An Ending starring Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling, followed by Robert Redford-starrer Our Souls At Night.
Photograph appears to be of the 'in a bustling city, two strangers from different worlds have their lives intertwine following a chance encounter' variety. While it's hardly the most original story, it'll be interesting to see what Batra adds to it and how this adds to his filmography. The trailer introduces us to Siddiqui, a street photographer who takes pictures of tourists by the Gateway Of India. After meeting the more well-off Malhotra, a student working toward being a chartered accountant, the two pose as lovers to convince Siddiqui's pressurising grandmother that he's found a girl to marry. Whether this apparent roleplaying will lead to something genuine is the question we are left with. Photograph had its World Premiere at The Sundance Film Festival followed by a Special Gala screening at the Berlin International Film Festival and was warmly received at both.
