Pa. Ranjith, who has used his directorial voice to great effect in anti-caste films such as Madras, Kabali and Kaala, returns as writer-director in Sarpatta Parambarai, a period film based on boxing starring Arya. The film is now slated for a direct to OTT release on Amazon Prime Video on July 22. The trailer of the film that dropped today, begins with visuals of a boxing match that's yet to start.

Props in the film are modified to read the film's credits. A referee holds up a board that says: Neelam Productions. We get a glimpse of Pasupathi as Rangan Vathiyar as he tries to get a look at the ring. A dialogue says that it's the British who taught him boxing. It continues that there was one boxing lineage that has now broken up into many. Kalaiyarasan appears as a boxer briefly.

Arya's character (Kabilan) appears to be on Rangan Vathiyar's side and a boxing match is set up as a wager. You hear dialogues that imply that Kabilan isn't given the opportunity that he needs. He seems to be prevented from boxing by specific groups. Near the end of the trailer, we are shown Kabilan entering the ring. The film promises to deliver a 'roshamaana aangila kuthu sandai'.

Earlier in March, the makers introduced the world of Sarpatta Parambarai. The first-look poster for Sarpatta featured Arya in a slightly bruised avatar — he's been hit on the face. But, his chiseled physique is certainly apt for the part.

The film is said to be set in North Madras of the 1970s when boxing groups were active. Sarpatta is directed by Pa. Ranjith, and stars Arya, Dushara Vijayan, Pasupathy, Anupama Kumar, John Vijay and Sanchana Natarajan. The film is written by Pa. Ranjith, and cinematography by Murali G. Selva RK is the editor. Music is by Santhosh Narayanan. It's produced by Neelam Productions and K9 Studios.  The film is set to release on July 22 on Amazon Prime Video.
