Shamshera Trailer Talk: Ranbir Kapoor Is The Messiah In This Historical Fantasy

The Shamshera trailer reveals more of what the teaser had shown: Ranbir Kapoor is a Robinhood figure among his people – a tribe in a fictional place called Kaza in 1881 that looks like the Hindukush mountains exchanged notes with Mohenjo Daro.

In the spirit of a historical fantasy, it's a slightly anachronistic world, where a police station and shops meets the landscape of an ancient civilisation. Kapoor's character seems to be a mischief-making dacoit who loots the rich and the gentry of the land, presumably to serve his tribe.

Enter the villain Sanjay Dutt's Shuddh Singh, a demented daroga who looks like a long-lost cousin of his character in Agneepath, which was also directed by Karon Malhotra. He speaks in peculiar Indian English and serves the British. There's Vaani Kapoor too.

Shamshera bears marks of Malhotra's Agneepath, in which he showed a knack for punchy, larger-than-life storytelling, as well as seems like an attempt to recreate something along the lines of blockbusters from South India like Baahubali and KGF. (Although given the setting and the banner of Yash Raj Films, some viewers may think of Thugs of Hindosthan too). It also seems to be Kapoor's first attempt to play a mass action hero. The final shot reveals a father-son angle.

The film has music by Mithoon and will release in theatres on July 22.
