Instead of going the rape-revenge route — so common and exploitative in Indian cinema — Aparna Sen's grayscaled The Rapist goes the other way. It attempts to understand, analyze, and resolve the psyche that allows for such a crime to take place.

Konkona Sensharma is raped one night and the the film follows her journey — the psychological aftershocks and her pursuit to understand what drives a man to commit to a heinous crime like rape. Tanmay Dhanania plays the rapist and Arjun Rampal plays her husband.

Produced by Sameer Nair, Deepak Segal, Suchhanda Chatterjee, and Shubha Shetty, The Rapist will be premiering at the 26th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), which is scheduled to be held from October 6-15. It will be premiering in the A Window on Asian cinema section.
