The Barbenheimer fervour might slowly be coming down from the fever-pitch it was at two weeks ago, but the two films are still performing remarkably well at the box-office, both in India and globally.
Greta Gerwig made history this weekend by becoming the first solo female director to helm a billion-dollar film. Barbie is estimated to have brought in $1.03 billion at the global box-office since its release on July 21. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer set a record of its own by becoming the highest-grossing film set during World War II. The film enters its third week after having collected $552.9 million worldwide.
Closer home, though, it’s a different story. Indian audiences seem to have taken to Oppenheimer, propelling the film over the Rs. 100-crore mark on its 13th day in theatres. On the other hand, Barbie currently stands at just a little over Rs. 40 crore in India.
Released a week after Barbie and Oppenheimer, Karan Johar’s latest directorial venture starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt — Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani — comfortably sailed into the Rs. 100-crore club in 10 days. Despite a slightly underwhelming opening, the film’s numbers have trended upwards thanks to positive word-of-mouth and no major releases the following week. However, Rocky Aur Rani’s excellent run so far is predicted to slow with the release of OMG 2 and Gadar 2 on August 11.
