Deadpool (2016) is not the first time Ryan Reynolds played Wade Wilson. He makes an appearance at the climactic scene of 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine as “the merc with no mouth.” The actor has played several comic heroes in his career, from Blade: Trinity (2004) to Green Lantern (2011).
Ryan Reynolds improvised a great deal of his scenes in Deadpool. He often revised the script with the writers, and even paid out of pocket to have them on set while filming.
It took eight hours to apply Ryan Reynolds’ full body make-up. Once it was on, the actor was unable to sit or lie down. Additionally, his Deadpool suit did not have a muscle layer underneath — unlike most superhero costumes.
According to Ryan Reynolds, the film features over a hundred pop-culture references, from easter eggs and cameos to clever jibes at other Marvel superheroes.
Deadpool was shot in 48 days. The film’s budget was lower than any of the X-Men, Iron Man, Avengers, or Captain America movies. However, it ended up being one of the highest-grossing films of 2016.
