Haasan had been in Hindi cinema for a while when Ramesh Sippy cast him opposite Dimple Kapadia in the love triangle that was Saagar. Both actors stole the show with their performances and chemistry.
Haasan played a father-son double role in the Shankar film, and in the latter portrayal, was seen wooing two women, one of them being Sapna, played by Urmila Matondkar.
Haasan directed and starred opposite Tabu, fresh off Maachis, Virasat, and Iruvar, in this remake of Avvai Shanmughi, which he had starred in. The film was a success and enjoys a favourable reputation even now.
Haasan starred in and directed Hey Ram, whose bilingual nature necessitated the casting of a number of Hindi actors. Shah Rukh Khan was the big draw, but Rani Mukerji drew tremendous attention as Aparna, Ram's (Hassan) first wife.
Haasan played two roles in Aalavandhan, and Raveena Tandon was cast opposite the straight-laced Haasan character, playing the journalist Tejaswini. The film was received mildly at the time, but emerged as a cult classic in later years.
Haasan and Manisha Koirala collaborated for the third time with Singeetam Srinivas Rao's black comedy, playing characters who fall in love after getting entangled in each other's lives due to unforeseen circumstances.
