Ranbir is Absolutely brilliant as this unhinged, train wreck of a man. No one else could pull off what Ranbir does here. He can make a character as awful as Vijay, compelling.
If you’ve ever wanted to see a world where actions have no consequences, check this out. Animal has violence of every sort - Emotional, Psychological, Sexual, and Physical. Men go at each other with or without weapons. It’s bloody, gore and abusive.
It makes you question what the idea of true masculinity is. go and ponder upon it. Caution: The director has an incredibly narrow and specific idea of what constitutes masculinity. Alpha = Emotionally stunted "Class A" jerk.
We’ve now seen 2 ways in which film critics impact filmmakers- Directly in Chup (2022) and in a meta-sense with Animal. Sandeep has not forgotten. He has not forgiven. Did you have a problem with his previous films? You will get a reply in this one.
Sandeep has a flair for rawness and emotional intensity - on the negative side, which has a stronger stimulation. Like him, if you actively seek ugliness and the high mental stimulation to degrade or be degraded, this might pull the right strings.
It does not choose to be but can be seen as a 3-hour 20-minute masterclass on What not to do as a parent, as a child, and as a functioning human being, in general, to feel good about yourself. Watch it and you can take notes, it won't make you less of a man.
