As the heartbroken young man battling grief in Neeraj Ghaywan's film, Vicky Kaushal stunned one and all, imprinting his character and self on the brain of the audience.
Kaushal played the muddled, drug-addled police officer hunting for a serial killer in the Anurag Kashyap film, reiterating that he had the acting chops to tackle complex characters well.
In the Meghna Gulzar film, Kaushal played a different idea of a Pakistan Army officer, lending him a humanity and heart that was anything but the norm.
Kaushal stretched the comic relief character of Rajkumar Hirani's biopic on Sanjay Dutt to stake claim to the hearts of the audience, becoming the affable, dependable friend whose trust is shattered.
Kashyap came calling again with the part of an over-the-top, indecisive young DJ whose romance gets torpedoed by his inaction in life and love, and Kaushal revelled in playing Vicky as such.
Shoojit Sircar recruited Kaushal to portray the fabled "Patient Assassin" - Udham Singh - whose journey of avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre took him across continents and two decades. Udham marked Kaushal's first biopic, and saw him hailed like never before.
To play India's first Field Marshal, Meghna Gulzar once again roped in Kaushal, and he rose above the tepid script and lazy filmmaking to capture the spirit and charisma of one of India's finest soldiers.
