A movie that revolves around the life of a musician couple, partly based on the real life story of Pandit Ravi Shankar and Annapurna Devi – it was inevitable that music would play a pivotal role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Abhimaan. So effective were the songs created by SD Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri, that even today the music is likely to be the first thing most people recall when they think of the movie. The appeal of the songs owed a lot to the beautiful incorporation of classical influences by Dada Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, as Jaya Bhaduri's voice, got the most airtime in the soundtrack, presumably to establish the superior talent of Bhaduri's character. Bachchan on the other hand had his songs divided between Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi and Manhar Udhas.

Best Song of Abhimaan: I go with the Rafi-Lata duet Teri Bindiya Re. Majrooh Sultanpuri's lines teem with playful romance, and the singers sound their expressive best. Burman on his part, sets the mellow tune to the soothing seven beat cycle, adding to the song's charm.

On a related note: For one of the soundtrack's biggest hits, Tere Mere Milan Ki Yeh Raina, composer derived inspiration from Rabindranath Tagore's Jodi Tare Nai Chini Go Seki.
