Starring Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt, the film was about an alien named PK who gets stranded on Earth when his 'remote control' is stolen. Without this he cannot contact his fellow aliens. What follows is PK's (Aamir Khan) brush with the various religions of our country and how he interprets them as an outsider in his quest to find the remote control. His only friend through this confusing time is journalist Jagat Janani played by Anushka Sharma. Director Rajkumar Hirani's film questioned the various superstitions in Indian society and showed how Godmen had turned religion into a business by exploiting the faith people placed in them.
The film courted controversy as members of various Hindu groups such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal burned posters of the film, disrupted screenings in some parts of the country and called for a ban on it, post the release. They claimed that the film was against Hinduism and hurt sentiments of the people in the country.
Written by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, PK was declared a blockbuster. It became the first Hindi film ever to cross the Rs 400 crores mark in domestic box office collections.
