Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus is based in 1303 when the Mughal ruler Alauddin Khilji's obsession with Rani Padmavati of Mewar. Padmavati stars Deepika Padukone in the titular role, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh plays the Mughal ruler, Alauddin Khilji. The trailer shows the wedding of Rani Padmavati and Maharawal Ratan Singh, and the siege of Chittor Fort by Khilji. Shot by Sudeep Chatterjee, the scale of production is grand while the lavish set by Subrata Chatterjee and Amit Ray as well as the costumes and jewellery have a distinct Rajput taste. Larger than life portrayals have been Sanjay Leela Bhansali's trademark.
Known to have been obsessed with the desire to make Padmavati his queen, Khilji laid siege to Chittor Fort in 1303. Once it became clear that the Mughals would emerge victorious, the women of Mewar jumped into the funeral pyre of their husbands committing jauhar – a preferred alternative to being captured by enemy soldiers.
The film has been delayed due to protests from the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, a group who assaulted the director and vandalised the sets in Jaipur. Padmavati releases on December 1.
