FC Disruptors: Basil Joseph

Not only did Basil Joseph direct Malayalam cinema’s first proper superhero film, Minnal Murali, and star in the hit comedy Jan-e-Man in 2021, this year he had three releases. The characters he played were often complex, portraying different aspects of Indian masculinity and the male ego. Joseph played the obnoxious abusive husband in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey and an earnest buddy in Dear Friend. In Palthu Janwar, he played a young man who wants to be an animator, but ends up becoming a livestock inspector. In addition to showcasing Joseph’s range as an actor, the roles indicate he’s looking to challenge himself and the audience.
