Here's a recap of the significant stories in entertainment across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films, and sometimes the odd television series as well.

Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh starrer Vaashi gets a release date (Malayalam)

Keerthy Suresh and Tovino Thomas will be playing lawyers in Vaashi. It looks like they will be up against each other in this courtroom drama. Releasing a motion poster of the film, the actors announced that "Their face-off begins on June 17". The first single 'Yaathonnum Parayathe' from the film was released on Saturday. The song was composed by Kailas Menon and Vinayak Sasikumar penned the lyrics.

The film is written by Janiz Chacko Simon and directed by Vishnu G Raghav. Arju Benn handles the editing department and Neil DCunha is the cinematographer. Vaashi is produced by G Suresh Kumar. 

Jr NTR and Prashanth Neel combo NTR 31 first look released  

After his successful outing in RRR, Jr NTR is working with Koratala Siva for NTR 30 and with Prashanth Neel for NTR 31. On May 20, marking his birthday, the first look of both films were released. NTR 31 is produced by Jr NTR in association with Mythri Movie Makers. 

NTR 30 is produced by Sudhakar Mikkilineni and Harikrishna K. Anirudh Ravichander composes the music, Ratnavelu helms the camera and Sreekar Prasad handles the editing. NTR and Koratala Siva had earlier worked together in 2016 Janata Garage, also starring Mohanlal. 

Trailer of Vikram, feat. Kamal Haasan, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj (Tamil)

The trailer of Vikram hints at an action-thriller. It starts off with Kamal's narration in the background about a jungle where a lion, tiger and leopard go on a hunt. He proudly claims that he has the entire control of the jungle and is the sole decision-maker. In a cop-gangster set-up, the three major characters appear to be caught in a web of their own revolutions that affects the others, resulting in guns, fires and blasts. 

Vikram is directed by Kaithi and Master fame Lokesh Kanagaraj. The star cast includes Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Narain, Antony Varghese, Arjun Das, Gayathrie Shankar and Shivani Narayanan. Suriya is said to play an important cameo. 

It is produced by Kamal Haasan & R.Mahendran under the banner Raaj Kamal films International. Anirudh Ravichander is the music composer. Cinematography is handled by Girish Gangadharan and editing is done by Philomin Raj. The film is slated to hit the theatres on June 3. 

Suraj Venjaramoodu's Heaven is a cop thriller (Malayalam)

Suraj Venjaramoodu, who was last seen in Jana Gana Mana, will play a cop in Unni Govindraj's Heaven. The teaser of the film does not reveal the main crime, but a major piece of evidence is a footprint that is 9 inches long.

Heaven is written by Unni Govindraj and PS Subramanian. The film is produced by A D Sreekumar, Rema Sreekumar, K Krishnan and T R Raghuraj. Gopi Sundar composes the music, Vinod Illampally handles the cinematography, and Toby John does the editing.

Vijay Sethupathi's Maamanithan gets a new release date (Tamil)

After being postponed several times due to different reasons, Vijay Sethupathi's Maamanithan is set to release on June 23. The film was earlier scheduled to hit the theatres on May 20 but was postponed to June 24. However, since a few Tamil films including Iravin Nizhal are slated to release on the same day, the makers have decided to release the film a day before. 

Maamanithan stars Vijay Sethupathi, Gayathrie Shankar, Guru Somasundaram, Shaji Chen, Jewel Mary, and Anikha Surendran in lead roles. The trio — Ilaiyaraaja and his two sons Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja — have scored the music for the film. 

Rakshit Shetty's 777 Charlie releases on June 10 (Kannada)

Dharma, played by Rakshit Shetty, is a lonely man who lives a mechanical life of eating, working, fighting and sleeping. The film takes you through the emotional journey of Dharma when a dog (Charlie) enters his life. 

777 Charlie is written and directed by Kiranraj K. It stars Rakshit Shetty, Sangeetha Sringeri, Raj B Shetty, Danish Sait and Bobby Simha. The film is produced by G S Gupta and Rakshit Shetty. Nobin Paul scores the music, Arvind S Kashyap handles the cinematography and Pratheek Shetty is the editor. 777 Charlie releases on June 10 in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.

Soubin Shahir's next titled Romancham (Malayalam)

Soubin Shahir and Arjun Ashokan team up for Jithu Madhavan's directorial is titled Romancham. The actors released the title posters on social media. It is billed as a horror-comedy entertainer. Kiran Das is roped in as the editor. It is produced by Girish Gangadharan, Soubin Sahir and John Paul George. Sanu Thahir handles the cinematography and Sushin Shyama scores the music. 

Kochaal looks like a cool cop drama (Malayalam)

Kochaal translates to "little one". Krishna Sankar plays a newbie in the police department, who is often teased as Kochaal and the teaser gives us glimpses of some funny moments. The film promises to be a light-hearted cop story and is scheduled to release on June 10. 

Kochaal is written by Midhun-Prajith and directed by Shyam Mohan. The film has Indrans, Krishna Sankar, Shine Tom Chacko and Murali Gopy in important roles. It is produced by Deep Nagda. Jomon Thomas and Arun Bhaskar are the cinematographers, Bijish Balakrishnan is the editor and Manikandan Ayyappa handles the background score.

Karthi's Viruman, Arya's Captain and Parthiban's Iravin Nizhal get release dates

Parthiban's Iravin Nizhal which is said to be the world's first single-shot non-linear film is scheduled to release on June 24. The film stars Parthiban, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Birgida Sag and Robo Shankar in lead roles. 

Teddy combo Arya and director Shakthi Soundar Rajan reunite for Captain. The first look poster created a buzz with some eerie creature in the background. The film also stars Simran, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Harish Uthaman and Kavya Shetty and is now scheduled to release on September 8. 

Karthi's Viruman is expected to release on August 31, on the occasion of Vinayaka Chaturthi. Director Shankar's daughter Aditi Shankar makes her film debut with Viruman and will be playing the female lead. The film is directed by Komban fame Muthaiya and produced by Suriya and Jyotika under the banner 2D Entertainment. The music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. 

Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha starrer titled Kushi, first look out (Telugu)

The film has borrowed its title from SJ Suryah's blockbuster Tamil romantic drama in 2000 titled Kushi, which was also later remade in Telugu. Directed by Shiva Nirvana, Kushi's first look features both the lead actors with explosions of something like cotton candy in the background. 

Billed as a romcom, it is scheduled to release on December 23, on the occasion of Christmas. The film will be released in all four south Indian languages — Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. It is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Ravi Shankar Y, under the banner Mythri Movie Makers. The music is composed by Hesham Abdul Wahab, G Murali is the DOP and Prawin Pudi is the editor.

Amith Chakalakkal starrer Theru teaser released  (Malayalam)

Theru means "The Rook" in chess. The teaser gives us glimpses of a cop thriller without revealing the plot. It looks like most of the chasing takes place in a forest.  Theru is written by Dinil PK and directed by SJ Sinu.

The film stars Amith Chakalakkal, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Baburaj, Vijayaraghavan, Sanju Sivram,Johan P Sam,  Sreejith Ravi, Prasanth Alexander and Pramod Veliyanad. The music is composed by Yakzan & Neha. T D Sreenivas is the DOP and Samjith Mohammed is the editor. 

Nayanthara tries to save fellow passengers in O2, teaser out (Tamil)

After her recent outing in Vignesh Shivan's Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, Nayanthara will be seen in a survival thriller titled O2 (Oxygen). The plot follows a bus riding towards Cochin that suddenly falls into a deep pit. The passengers do not have any contact with the outside world. How will they manage to escape?

O2 is written and directed by debutant GS Viknesh. It is produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures. Thamizh A Azhagan is the DOP, Selva RK is the editor and Vishal Chandrasekar is the music director. The film will stream on Disney+ Hotstar and will be available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

Vikram's Cobra is slated to hit the theatres on August 11 (Tamil)

Cobra is directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu and stars Vikram, Irfan Pathan, Srinidhi Shetty, KS Ravikumar, Roshan Mathew, Mrinalini and Lal in important roles. The film is scheduled to release in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi on August 11, four days before Independence Day. AR Rahman is the music composer, Bhuvan Srinivasan is the editor and Harish Kannan is the DOP. The film is produced by SS Lalith Kumar. 

Thattukada Muthal Semitheri Vare releases on June 3 (Malayalam)

Thattukada Muthal Semitheri Vare is touted as a suspense thriller. It is written and directed by Suraj Fantasy and stars Jagadish Kumar, Jelson Alappatt, Alku, VK Baiju, Sunil Sukhada, Cobra Rajesh and Lijo Augustine. The film is produced by Shameer Ali K, Aneesh Tirur is the DOP and the music is composed by Shafeek Rahman.
