Here’s a recap of the significant stories in entertainment across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films, and sometimes the odd television series as well.

Rana Daggubati’s first look from Rana Naidu is out (Telugu)

Helmed by Karan Anshuman and Suparn Verma, Rana Naidu is an official adaptation of the American show Ray Donovan. On the occasion of the actor’s birthday, the streaming platform released the character poster on their social media. The show follows the life of Rana Naidu, who does the dirty work for people in power. Produced by Aaron Sunder of Locomotive Global Inc, the show also stars Venkatesh Daggubati, Surveen Chawla, and Sushant Singh.

Pawan Kalyan teams up with Harish Shankar for Ustaad Bhagat Singh (Telugu)

After Gabbar Singh, Pawan Kalyan reunites with Harish Shankar for Ustaad Bhagat Singh. The first look poster of the film was released with the caption, “This time, it's not just entertainment.” The poster features Pawan Kalyan holding a glass of tea, sporting an intense look. The film is produced by Mythri Movie Makers and has music by Devi Sri Prasad.

First look of Santosh Shobhan and Priya Bhavani Shankar's Kalyanam Kamaneeyam is out (Telugu)

Billed as a romantic drama, Kalyanam Kamaneeyam is set to be released in theatres on January 14, 2023. The first look and the title posters were released on social media by the makers of the film. Directed by Anil Kumar Aalla, the film is produced by UV Concepts.

Malavika Mohanan and Mathew Thomas-starrer gets a title (Malayalam)

Directed by debutant Alvin Henry, the film is titled, Christy. Set against the background of Poovar, the film follows the lives of common people living in the island. Benyamin and G Indugopan have penned the screenplay for Christy and the film marks Malavika Mohan’s comeback to Malayalam cinema after Pattam Pole and The Great Father

First look of Raj B Shetty from Swati Mutthina Male Haniye is out (Kannada)

Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye is a romantic drama. The character poster of Raj B Shetty was released by the makers and he plays a character named Aniketh, whose name means, “one with no home.”  Siri Ravikumar has been roped in to play the female lead opposite Raj B Shetty. The film marks Raj B Shetty’s third directorial venture after Ondu Motteya Kathe, and Garuda Gamana Vrushabha Vahana.  

Naveen Shankar's next is titled Moolathaha Nammavare (Kannada)

Billed as a family drama, the film revolves around a father-son relationship. Actor Shobhraj will be essaying the role of a father in the Naveen Shankar-starrer. Directed by Chetan Bhaskaraiah. the film co-stars Tanya Kalrra, Kavya, Avinash, Malvika Avinash, and Telugu actor Sathyaprakash.

Trisha starrer Raangi gets a release date (Tamil)

Directed by Saravanan, Raangi was wrapped up in February 2020. Touted to be a thriller, the film is slated to be released on December 30. Produced by Lyca Productions and written by AR Murugadoss, the film has music by C Sathya.

Vijay Antony's Tamilarasan releases on December 30 (Tamil)

The release of music composer-turned-actor Vijay Antony’s Tamilarasan was delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak. The film, which was supposed to release in 2020, finally gets a release date. Tamilarasan is an action thriller in which Vijay Antony is set to fight a social cause. The film stars Ramya Nambeesan, Suresh Gopi, Sonu Sood, and Yogi Babu in prominent roles. The film is set to hit the screens on December 30. 

Sanal Aman joins Karthi's Japan (Tamil)

Malayalam actor Sanal Aman of Malik fame makes his Tamil debut with Japan. Directed by Raju Murugan, the film stars Karthi, Anu Emmanuel, Sunil, and Vijay Milton in prominent roles. Actor Sanal Aman is said to play a pivotal role in the film and the actor shared the announcement on his social media. Japan is Karthi’s 25th film and will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.  

Unni Mukundan-starrer Malikapuram gets a trailer Malayalam

Malikapuram is a feel good family movie filled with a lot of emotion. The film follows an eight-year-old girl devotee of Lord Ayyappa, who longs to visit Sabarimala. Unni Mukundan will be seen playing the character of Lord Ayyappa. Malikapuram is written by Abhilash Pillai and directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar.

Theatre standees with Chiranjeevi's look from Waltair Veerayya revealed (Telugu)

Chiranjeevi and Shruti Haasan starrer Waltair Veerayya is set to hit screens on January 13, 2023. Makers of the film have released the posters that will be featured on the theatre standees. The massive standees of the actor have been sent to theatres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. 

Directed by  Bobby Kolli, Waltair Veerayya is a mass action entertainer that also stars Ravi Teja and Urvashi Rautela.

Ravi Teja starrer Dhamaka gets a  trailer (Telugu)

Billed to be a commercial entertainer, Dhamaka follows Swamy and Ananda Chakravarty, both characters played by Ravi Teja. While one character will be a rich millionaire, the other will be a homeless person. The trailer of the film promises complete entertainment with a perfect blend of actions, songs, and emotions. 

It is helmed by Thrinadha Rao Nakkina and written by Prasanna Kumar Bezawada.

Vishal starrer Laththi gets a trailer (Tamil)

Laththi is an action thriller. The film follows a police constable named Muruganandham, played by Vishal. He has been introduced  as the ‘Laththi expert’. The action sequences of the film have been choreographed by  Peter Hein and the film is set to be released on December 22. It has been written and directed by A Vinoth Kumar.

2018, Heroes of the Kerala Floods are in Focus (Malayalam)

Jude Anthony Joseph’s 2018 details the horrors of 2018 Kerala floods and how people came together to save each other. The film goes with the tagline, “Everyone is a hero”. Inspired by true events, the film’s teaser opens with gusty wind and heavy rainfall. “Two major cyclonic depressions have been forecasted”, the teaser tells us. While some of them enjoy the sudden downpour, many struggle to live in their house with walls collapsing and water finding it’s way in. 

2018 features an ensemble cast including Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Kalaiyarasan, Narain, Lal, Indrans,and  Aju Varghese.

Muthuvel Pandian arrives in vintage Rajinikanth style in Jailer (Tamil)

Director Nelson Dilipkumar is known for his straightaced brand of dark yet action comedies. And the next in line for the filmmaker is Jailer, which sees him collaborate for the first time with screen icon Rajinikanth. The superstar plays a prison guard named Muthuvel Pandian in the film.

Produced by Sun Pictures, the film co-stars Ramya Krishnan, Shiva Rajkumar, Vasanth Ravi, Yogi Babu, and Vinayakan. While Vijay Karthik has lensed the film, R Nirmal has handled the editing.

SS Rajamouli's RRR gets eight nominations at HCA and Golden Globes (Telugu)

Hollywood Critics Association Awards announced eight nominations for RRR including Best Picture and Best Director. SS Rajamouli has been nominated in the same category alongside Park Chan-Wook and Steven Spielberg. The other categories for which the film bagged nominations include Best International Film, Best Action Film, Best Editing, Best VFX, Best Original Song and Best Stunts. The film was also nominated at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture - Non-English and Best Original Song - Motion Picture.
