Here's a recap of the significant stories in entertainment across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films, and sometimes the odd television series as well.

Victim, a SonyLIV original anthology, traces the battle of four victims in a race against time (Tamil)

Set against the backdrop of a hotel room, farmland, an apartment, and a horror villa, the anthology traces the lives of four people, all of whom deal with different kinds of predators. The anthology stars Nasser, Thambi Ramaiah, Natraj (Natty), Priya Bhavani Shankar, Kalaiyarasan, Guru Somasundaram, Prasanna, Amala Paul, Krish, and others. Victim, which goes with the tagline "Who is next?", is slated to stream on SonyLIV from August 5.

Pa Ranjith has directed Dhammam, Rajesh M's segment is titled Mirrage, Chimbudevan has helmed the narrative Kottai Pakku Vathalum..Mottai Maadi Sitharum!, and Venkat Prabhu is behind Confession. Victim is produced by Axess Film Factory and Venkat Prabhu's Black Ticket Company. While R Saravanan, Sakthi Saravanan, and Thamizh A Azhaga have lensed the anthology, it has music by Sam CS, Premgi, Ganesh Sekar, and Tenma. Lawrence Kishore, Akash Thomas, Selva RK, and Venkat Raajen have handled the editing.

Soorarai Pottru, Mandela, Ayyappanum Koshiyum bag National Awards 

South films dominated the 68th National Film Awards with films like Soorarai Pottru and  Ayyappanum Koshiyum winning multiple awards. South films have won 19 awards in different categories. Director Sudha Kongara's Soorarai Pottru starring Suriya and Aparna Balamurali won the honors of Best Actor (Suriya shared the award with Ajay Devgan for his performance in Tanhaji), Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best background score (GV Prakash Kumar) and Best Film. 

Sivaranjiniyum Innum Sila Pengalum was named the best Tamil film and won awards for Best Editing and Best Supporting Actress (Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli). Dollu, Thinkalazcha Nishchayam, and Colour Photo won Best Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu films, respectively. Malayalam film Ayyappanum Koshiyum won awards for Best Director, Best Stunt Choreography, and Best Supporting Actor (Niju Menon).

 Vijay Deverakonda plays a dynamic kickboxer in Liger (Telugu)

"My son is born to a lion and a tiger — he is a crossbreed," says Ramya Krishnan with a tinge of pride, seconds into the trailer, introducing Vijay Deverakonda as Liger, a Mixed Martial Arts fighter determined to work up the ladder. Liger, who suffers from a slight stammer, is encouraged by trainer Ronit Roy, who helps him represent India in the kickboxing sport. And the trailer end gives us glimpses of boxer Mike Tyson making his stylish appearance.

Liger, which is set to be released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada, stars Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Panday, Mike Tyson, Ramya Krishnan, Vishu Reddy, Ali, Makarand Desh Pandey, and Getup Srinu. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, Liger is produced under the banners Dharma Productions and Puri Connects. The film is set to be released in the theatres on 25 August.

Paper Rocket releases on Zee5 on July 29 (Tamil)

Jeeva (Kalidas Jayaram) helps six people with different pasts and problems to embark on a life-changing journey. But the trip is not entirely fun. Tackling personal and social problems and creating some sweet memories along the way, Paper Rocket, much like its title, is about trying to fulfill their major wishes. 

Paper Rocket, directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, stars Kalidas Jayaram, Tanya S Ravichandran, K Renuka, Karunakaran, Nirmal Palazhi, Gouri G. Kishan, Dheeraj, Nagineedu.V, Chinni Jayanth and Kaali Venkat. It is produced by Sreenidhi Sagar under Rise East Productions. Simon K King has scored the music, Lawrence Kishore has handled the editing and Richard M Nathan & Gavemic U Ary have helmed the camera. 

Prajwal Devraj's Abbara teaser out (Kannada)

Abbara is an action entertainer releasing on August 12 in theatres. Prajwal is said to be sporting five different looks in the film. Apart from Prajwal, Abbara stars Rajshri Ponnappa, Lekha Chandra, Nimika Ratnakar and Ravishankar. The film is directed by K Ramnarayan and is produced by Basavaraj Manchaiah Hithalapura under the banner C & M Movies. While J.K Ganesh is the DOP, KGF fame Ravi Basrur is the music composer and Venkatesh UDV is the editor. 

Vijay Sethupathi-Nithya Menon starrer 19(1)(a)  explores a writer's journey (Malayalam)

The teaser of 19(1)(a), written and directed by Indhu VS features Nithya Menen as an aspiring writer, who works at a local phone-xerox shop. Throughout the film's teaser, the actress can be found buried deep into her notes, scribbling away. Vijay Sethupathi plays a well-wisher who has a good deal of knowledge about the writing industry and seems to encourage Nithya's flair for writing.  

19(1)(a) co-stars Indrajith Sukumaran, Indrans, Srikant Murali, Atulya Ashadam, Bagath Manuel, and Deepak Parambol. The film has music by 96 fame Govind Vasantha. It has been produced by Anto Joseph and Neeta Pinto and lensed by Manesh Madhav.

Lijo Mold Jose's Visudha Mejo gets a trailer (Malayalam)

Vishudha Mejo is a love story with  Lijo Mol Jose, Dinoy Poulose, and Mathew Thomas playing the major roles. Directed by Kiran Antony, the film is produced by Vinod Shornur, Jomon T John, and Shameer Muhammed. The film has music by Justin Varghese, editing by Shameer Muhammed, and cinematography by Jomont John. It is expected to hit the theatres on August 5. 

Kadamaiyai Sei gets a new release date (Tamil)

SJ Suryah's Kadamaiyai Sei has him play a watchman who develops a brain disease called stooper because of an accident. It traces his everyday struggles and how he manages to take revenge on his enemies. This film was earlier slated to hit in the last week of June but was postponed. It has now been scheduled to release on August 12. 

The film also stars Yashika Anand, Mottai Rajendran, Vincent Ashokan, Charles Vinodh, and Seshu. It is written and directed by Venkatt Ragavan. Vinoth Rathinasamy handles the DOP and Arun Raj is the music director. Kadamaiyai Sei is produced by TR Ramesh and S Zahir Hussain. 

Amala Paul's Cadaver releases on Disney+ Hotstar (Tamil)

Billed as a forensic crime thriller, Amala Paul will be playing a forensic surgeon in Cadaver. The film is all set to skip theatrical release and stream directly on Disney+ Hotstar soon. Amala Paul also makes her debut as a producer with this film. The story is penned by Abhilash Pillai and directed by Anoop S Panicker. The cast includes Athulya Ravi, Harish Uthaman, Riythvika, and Munishkanth. The film has music composed by Ranjin Raj. While San Lokesh has edited the film, Aravinnd Singh has handled the editing.  

Bharath and Vani Bhojan starrer Miral second look out (Tamil)

Directed by debutant Shakthivel, the Bharath and Vani Bhojan starrer is a romantic thriller. The second look poster hints at a fire accident in a windmill farm, which forms the major plot point of the film. 

Produced by Axess Film Factory, the film co-stars K S Ravikumar, Meerakrishnan, Rajkumar, and Kavya Arivumani. Kalaivannan R handles the editing, Suresh Bala does the cinematography and Prasad SN is scoring the music for the film. 

Kunchacko Boban's Nna Thaan Case Kodu releases on August 11, new poster released (Malayalam)

Nna Thaan Case Kodu follows the life of a thief named Kozhummal Rajeevan, who files a case after a dog bites him while he is out stealing. Starring Kunchako Boban, the film releases on August 11. It is a satirical courtroom drama that co-stars Super Deluxe-fame Gayathrie Shankar and Rajesh Madhavan who play important roles. 

Written and directed by Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval, Nna Thaan Case Kodu is produced by Santhosh T.kuruvilla. Kunchacko Boban and Sherin Rachel Santhosh have co-produced the film. Manoj Kannoth has been roped in as the editor, Dawn Vincent has scored the music and Rakesh Haridas has cranked the camera.

Holly Wound traces the romantic relationship between two suppressed women (Malayalam)

Touted as a silent movie, Holly Wound which explores the relationship of two women, a nun and a housewife, releases on August 12 on the SS Frames OTT platform. The film stars Janaki Sudheer, Amrutha Vinod, and Shabu Praudeen.

Penned by Paul Wiclif, the film is directed by Asok R Nath and produced by Sandeep R. While Ronnie Raphael has composed the music, Unni Madavoor has lensed the camera and Vipin Mannoor has handled the editing. 

Saiju Kurup's Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan gets a sequel (Malayalam)

Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan starring Saiju Kurup in the titular role was released in February 2022. The makers of the film are now making a sequel to it. Director Arun Vaiga made the announcement of the second part by releasing a glimpse of its screenplay on social media. 

The first part traced the funny moments that happened during a marriage function. It featured actors Saiju Kurup, Siju Wilson, Shabareesh Varma, Johny Antony, Sagar Surya, Sabumon Abdusamad, and Jaffar Idukki.

Prabhu Deva's Bagheera is slated to release on August 11 (Tamil)

Written and directed by Adhik Ravichandran, Bagheera is said to be a psycho thriller that stars several female actors including Amyra Dastur, Ramya Nambeesan, Janani, Sanchita Shetty, Gayathrie Shankar, Sakshi Agarwal, and Sonia Agarwal. 

Releasing on August 11, the Prabhu Deva starrer is produced by Bharathan pictures. While Abhinandhan Ramanujam and Selvakumar SK have shot the film, Ganesan Sekar has scored the music and Ruben has handled the editing.
