Released on March 7 in 2014, Queen has come to define Kangana Ranaut's career. The film, which raked in most of the major awards that year, established her reputation as one of Hindi cinema's top performers. She also received the National Award for best actress for her role.

In the movie, Kangana played a shy Rani Mehra, raised in a conservative middle-class family, whose betrothed Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) breaks up with her right before their wedding. Heartbroken and distraught, Rani decides to go on her already-planned honeymoon trip to Paris and Amsterdam alone. The journey proves to be a life-changing one as she ends up making unexpected new friends (like the carefree Vijaylakshmi portrayed by Lisa Haydon) and discovers her confidence.

Besides Kangana's acting, Queen was hailed by many critics for highlighting a woman's story and its authentic characterisation of Rani's upbringing and demeanour. Director Vikas Bahl revealed that he had conceived the film keeping the actress in mind.

Along with Bahl, co-writers Chaitally Parmar and Parveez Shaikh are credited for Queen's story and screenplay. Dialogues were penned by Anvita Dutt. Kangana also received a dialogue credit as she reportedly improvised some of the scenes during shooting. Last year, some reports suggested that a sequel might be in the works but nothing has been confirmed.
