Everything You Need To Know About Streaming App Quibi

Another day, another streaming app available to download. American app Quibi launched worldwide earlier this April, with an impressive line-up of stars (its shows feature Christoph Waltz, Anna Kendrick, Sophie Turner and Crissy Teigen, among others) and a focus on snackable content. It's since had 1.7 million downloads. Here's everything you need to know about it:

What Can I Watch?

Available on Google Play and the Apple App Store, Quibi's content is a mix of 25 scripted and unscripted shows, with a 100-plus more in development. The app's name is derived from the words 'Quick Bites' and that's exactly what you get. Each of the episodes is capped at 10 minutes, with some as short as 5.

There's Chrissy's Court, a reality TV series in which supermodel Chrissy Teigen presides over real (but frivolous) court cases, such as a couple arguing over whether a particular gift to a friend would be inappropriate. Dishmantled, hosted by The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Titus Burgess, features two blindfolded contestants getting dishes blasted into their face and then recreating them to win cash prizes.

Among the show's fiction offerings are Most Dangerous Game, based on the classic 1924 short story of the same name, in which a man hunts people on his private island for sport. Starring Christoph Waltz and Liam Hemsworth, the 'movie' is divided into 'chapters', each of which ends on a cliffhanger. Sophie Turner stars as a plane crash survivor who must work with a co-passenger to escape the remote mountain they're stranded on in Survive, which has a similar format.

Not all of the episodes drop at the same time, which means you have to keep logging in to find out what's happened.

How Much?

The app is free for the first 90 days, after which it costs Rs 669 a month, a pricier deal than Netflix (which offers four screens for Rs 799 a month).

The Good

Quibi has something for everyone, from a docuseries on female animals narrated by Reese Witherspoon to a horror anthology produced by Sam Raimi to a reality show in which celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez donate $100,000 to a random person. There are also news segments and lifestyle shows.

The Bad

The app is designed solely to cater to the mobile viewing experience, which means you won't be able to watch its content on bigger screens.
