Cannes 2017: True To Form, Sonam Knocks It Out Of The Park

If the French names and the long trains leave you confused, we are breaking down the fashion choices of our leading ladies at Cannes this year.

THE LABEL: Elie Saab

HOW DO YOU SAY IT: El-e Saab

WHO IS HE: Elie Saab is a Lebanese fashion designer, with workshops now in Lebanon, Paris and Milan. He launched his fashion label in Beirut in 1982 at the age of 18 specialising in bridal couture. His dreamy eveningwear has found its way to many Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities including Halle Berry, Beyonce, Angelina Jolie, Freida Pinto, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and of course Sonam Kapoor.

OUR SAY: If there is anyone who treats her red carpet appearances with the focus of any other job that she'd undertake, it is Sonam Kapoor. With every passing year at Cannes, she has shown us that she, along with her sister and stylist Rhea Kapoor, has a plan and a vision for what she has to say through her choice of couture. From knocking it out of the park in her debut appearance in a white Jean-Paul Gaultier, to going gothic Victorian in an Alexander McQueen lace gown, wearing an outrageous meme-worthy feathery Elie Saab, a show-stopping sari inspired Ralph & Russo, or giving her heritage a modern twist in an Anamika Khanna caped sari look – she keeps it interesting and has us engaged. Wearing a nose ring or a haath-phool, sporting a bob or a sleek updo, her hair and make-up has something to say too.

So just as had us trained to expect the unexpected, she surprises us by going all wispy and feminine, gilded in a shimmering rose gold gown skimming her curves for the hourglass fit, the fluid chiffon sleeves and back trailing behind her. The look may not be her most experimental yet, but it is something she hasn't worn before and therefore looked fresh. Sonam added her distinct touch with the diamond encrusted haath-phool making the look, as usual, all her own.
