Hot Take: We miss the adventurous Kangana of Cannes 2018. The actor takes a wrong fashion turn with her latest co-creation made in conjunction with Falguni & Shane Peacock, and sari brand Madhurya.

Days before Kangana Ranaut made her way to Cannes, she announced (warned?) about how she'd co-create a look, which was to be a true representation of our crafts. "My stylist Ami Patel and I have been brainstorming for a few weeks. We, along with Falguni and Shane Peacock, are designing a unique saree. The idea is to revive the forgotten weaves and bring them to the fore so that the world is more aware of our rich fabrics and culture (sic)," Ranaut said.

What we got, in the name of much-abused "indo-western" fusion, was yet another sari dress. For all the mentions of Falguni and Shane Peacock in the pre-event buzz, the makers of the kanjeevaram sari – Bangalore-based brand Madhurya – she set out to highlight were lost. The look felt dated, not vintage (which I believe was the intention). The gloves and shoes did nothing to elevate the look either.

The whole outing has been a marked departure from last year, when stylists (and Vogue India alums) Edward Lalrempuia and Lorna McGee assembled one headline-worthy piece after another.

For those missing her adventurous Cannes 2018 avatar, there was a nod to Nedo – designer Nedret Taciroglu's label behind the very disco jumpsuit she chose last year. This time, she wore a risque embellished jacket by Taciroglu. Which, unfortunately, fell off the mark. Where did the old Ranaut go?
