The Vijay Deverakonda – Rashmika Mandanna starrer Geetha Govindam has emerged as the latest blockbuster at the Tollywood box-office. Directed by Parasuram and produced by Bunny Vas for GA2 Pictures, the film has gone from strength to strength, right from its opening show on August 15. Leading Tollywood celebrities Chiranjeevi, Mahesh Babu, SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan, Allu Arjun and Samantha have also praised this romance-family drama. A grand success celebration event was held in Hyderabad on Sunday evening, with Chiranjeevi as the guest of honour.
In five days, Geetha Govindam has comfortably grossed more than 50 CR worldwide with a theatrical share of close to 32 CR. The worldwide theatrical recovery is more than double the investment of 15 CR. The Telugu states accounted for almost 60% of the film's total WW gross, with the other markets pitching in strongly too.
Geetha Govindam also performed well in the usually less-receptive Tamil Nadu belt. Each of its special morning shows scheduled on August 15 and over the weekend saw housefulls. Vijay Deverakonda will soon be making his Tamil debut with the Tamil-Telugu bilingual film, NOTA, directed by Anand Shankar. The success of Geetha Govindam in TN bodes well for the young hero's Kollywood prospects.
Geetha Govindam opened in about 70 screens in TN on Wednesday and has grossed an extraordinary 3.35 CR in the state over the past five days, according to distributors Sakthi Film Factory. This number is bigger than the lifetime numbers of most superstar-driven Telugu mass masala films in TN. In Chennai city, Geetha Govindam grossed 67 lakhs in five days. These are great numbers, considering the competition from big Tamil films like Kolamaavu Kokila, Pyaar Prema Kaadhal and Vishwaroopam 2.
Geetha Govindam grossed an opening 5.1 CR in Karnataka, again an achievement. In the USA, the film crossed the $1.5 million gross mark (10.5 CR INR) after the opening five days (including the Tuesday premieres). This marks Vijay's third million-dollar grosser at the US box-office after Pellichoopulu and Arjun Reddy. The film is certain to enter the elusive $2 million dollar club.
In Australia, Geetha Govindam grossed A$ 202,266 (1.03 CR INR) after its extended opening weekend, comfortably besting the two new Bollywood releases, Gold and Satyameva Jayate. This is the fourth best opening for a Telugu film in Australia this year, after Bharat Ane Nenu, Rangasthalam and Agnyaathavaasi.
Going by how Geetha Govindam has performed so far, it won't come as a surprise if it crosses the 100-CR gross mark.
