In Heart of Stone, the latest Netflix film releasing this Friday, Gal Gadot plays a double agent. She’s Rachel Stone, a shy member of British intelligence MI6 pretending to be unaccustomed to fieldwork, but she’s also secretly a skilled operative working for The Charter – a group of agents from all over the world banding together to shun bureaucratic hurdles in favour of saving lives anywhere, anyhow. Each of them is codenamed after a playing card – Stone is also known as the Nine Of Hearts.

The Charter’s work is made easier by the ‘heart’, an artificial intelligence that can hack into any camera feed, dig up personal information on anyone and analyse trillions of data points to craft the most efficient blueprint for any mission to be carried out. This means that whoever has it is guaranteed success in their plans, for better or worse. Directed by Tom Harper, who has previously helmed episodes of Peaky Blinders, the action thriller is a globetrotting adventure that travels from deserts to ice caps.

Who Does Alia Bhatt Play?

Releasing just weeks after Bhatt’s turn as a sharp-tongued Bengali anchor in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Heart of Stone sees the actor play a genius Indian hacker. Though positioned as ‘villain’, the film makes accommodations for Bhatt’s youthful looks and girlish demeanor, explicitly stating that her character, Keya Dhawan, is just 22 years old. (The actor herself is eight years older.) Keya was orphaned at a young age and adopted by a wealthy businessman who spotted and nurtured her technological prowess. When the film begins, they’ve had a falling out. Keya is now after The Charter’s heart, outmaneuvering Stone at several points and being outmaneuvered herself as a result of inexperience.

Jamie Dornan plays Parker, an MI6 operative on Stone’s team, unaware of her status as a double agent. Also on Stone’s team are Yang (Jing Lusi) and Bailey (Paul Ready). Sophie Okonedo plays Nomad, Stone’s handler from The Charter who repeatedly reminds her not to get to close to her MI6 teammates so that she can preserve her secret identity. Matthias Schweighöfer plays a Charter agent codenamed the Jack of Hearts. He’s the voice in Stone’s ear, using the heart to help her plot exit routes and battle strategies during missions.
