The Love Sonia trailer opens with a placard saying, 'Inspired by true events.' It ends with the sobering reminder that 270 women and girls go missing in India every day. The images in between are grim – underage girls in Mumbai's dark, dingy brothels.
We flashback to two sisters who are inseparable, until a woman shows up at their village home, promises to give one of them a job and hands their father a wad of cash. The girl is sent to Mumbai, much to her sister Sonia's despair. Sonia follows her, determined to bring her home. She enlists the help of fellow sex workers (Freida Pinto and Richa Chadha) for the task.
The situation turns even more grim after the girls are put into containers and shipped to China as part of an international sex trafficking ring.
Love Sonia is directed by Tabrez Noorani and produced by David Womark, who also produced The Life of Pi. The film, which also stars Anupam Kher, Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkummar Rao, Demi Moore and Mark Duplass, premiered at the London Indian Film Festival in June this year. It will release on September 14.
