Navarasa is an ambitious nine-film anthology produced by Mani Ratnam, along with director Jayendra (180), that brings together some of the biggest directors and actors in Tamil cinema. The release date announcement video was released today. Featuring almost no colour (expect the red of the pottu and sindhooram for Revathi's character), the two minute 26 second black and white trailer uses no still or shots from the film.
Instead, it uses a variety of closeup shots highlighting several expressions and the nature of their stories in the film. For instance, the shot of Revathi's suggest that her 'rasa' could deal with the idea of Karuna/soka or sorrow, possibly dealing with the death of her husband. The same way, Prayaga Martin's shot hints that her portion could be shringara.
Directors who are a part of Navarasa are Gautham Vasudev Menon (Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya), Bejoy Nambiar(Shaitan, Wazir), Karthik Subbaraj (Petta, Jigarthanda), Sarjun KM, Priyadarshan, Vasanth, Karthick Naren (Dhruvangal Pathinaru), Rathindra Prasad and Arvind Swami.
Each film is expected to represent a certain emotion: love, laughter, sorrow, anger, courage, fear, disgust, wonder and peace. The anthology features actors as Revathy, Nithya Menen, Parvathy, Aishwarya Rajesh, Poorna and Riythvika, apart from Suriya, Arvind Swami, Vijay Sethupathi, Prakash Raj, Siddharth, Gautham Karthik and Ashok Selvan.
The shorts will have music by AR Rahman, D Imman, Ghibran, Govind Vasantha and Justin Prabhakaran, Vishal Bharadwaj, while Santosh Sivan, Manoj Paramahamsa, Balasubramaniem and Abhinandan Ramanujam are cinematographers who are part of the project.
Navarasa is Netflix's second anthology in the Tamil industry after Paava Kadhaigal (Sin Stories) which united filmmakers such as Gautham Vasudev Menon, Sudha Kongara, Vetri Maaran and Vignesh Shivan.
