Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards this evening. Initially meant to be held on February 28, the COVID19 pandemic and subsequent reorganization of the awards season called for a rescheduling to April 25. The eligibility window for the Oscars was, as a result, extended to films releasing between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021, two months longer than normal. It even temporarily removed requirements that a movie must play in theaters to be considered. No host has been announced.
It must be noted that Oscar history was made with two women being nominated for Best Director in the same year – Chloé Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. Zhao also makes history as the first woman of Asian descent nominated in the category. It's also the first time two directors of Asian origin have been nominated in the same year: Zhao and Lee Isaac Chung for Minari.
Additionally, Minari received several major nominations, after a controversial shutout at the Golden Globes, which dubbed it a "foreign language film" and thus ineligible for the main awards.
