Helmed by debutante NS Ponkumar, and produced by AR Murgadoss, August 16th 1947 promises to be a unique take on the Indian struggle for independence. While the rest of the country is celebrating the victory of the freedom struggle, what happens when Sengadu, a village in the interiors of Tamil Nadu, doesn’t get the message that India became independent?
“Like holding a knife with no courage to use it, independence would be a waste for people who live with fear”, says Gautham Karthik, essaying the role of a rebel slave who revolts against the British. Nestled within this struggle against forced slavery is a beautiful love tale between characters played by Gautham and Revathy Sharma.
The catalyst for Gautham's revolt is seeing his lover trapped in the village. “Whenever I do anything for her, her face blossoms up with a smile,” says Gautham. The trailer teases several moments of intense combat and drama, as the villagers rise against their supremacists.
The film features music by Sean Roldan and costars Pugazh and Richard Ashton.
