After agreeing to do Dahaad, Vijay Varma requested director Reema Kagti to give him nice guy roles. "When these characters come to me, I am like, 'Why don't you go to someone else with these characters?' When Reema gave me this character, I said, 'I will do this, but next time give me a nice guy (role)'. She said, 'First do this'," he recalled.
Varma has played grey or morally flawed men in movies including a thug in Gully Boy (2019), an abusive husband in Darlings (2022), and a gangster in She (2020).
In Dahaad, Varma essays a school teacher suspected of murder. "I was drawn to the script and I couldn't put it down. I read eight episodes in a day and a half. It is a delicious part and I am a very greedy actor," Varma told a media source in an interview.
Dahaad is co-created by Kagti and Zoya Akhtar and stars Sonakshi Sinha. The show also stars Sohum Shah and Gulshan Devaiah. It airs on Prime Video from May 12.
