It's 2020 and Hindi cinema is still using gay people as the punchline. The Jawaani Jaaneman trailer begins with Farida Jalal, eyes downcast, dropping the news that a friend's son has come out. The revelation is punctuated with bombastic music. "Ma, I'm not gay. Aur agar hota bhi toh kya problem hai?" says her son, played by Saif Ali Khan. She responds with a "HAIN?".
Cue montage of Khan getting his groove on at a club, spending time at the salon, weightlifting while drinking beer, and bringing women home. "Sher hoon main, sher. Aur sher tab tak raja hota hai jab tak akela rehta hai," he says.
His idyll is soon punctured when a 21-year-old woman (Alaya F) turns up at his doorstep, claiming to be his daughter. One DNA test later, it seems as though Khan must come to terms with his past and learn to become a responsible father. Especially now that his daughter is pregnant herself. But that's when the girl's mother (Tabu) shows up, her hard-partying ways even worse than Khan's. They trade insults – "negative insaan" and "hippie" – but must put up a united front for their child.
The trailer also features a remix of 90s hit 'Ole Ole' and the familiar Punjabi number 'Jine Mera Dil Luteya'. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Jawaani Jaaneman releases on January 31.
