The trailer for the (new?) Love Aaj Kal is here.
For reasons unknown, writer-director Imtiaz Ali has decided to give the spin-off/follow-up/sequel to his 2009 film the exact same title. Expect much confusion and Googling nightmares in the coming years.
That film starred Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan. This one stars his daughter Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan in the lead. Like that film, this also follows two love stories set across two time periods, modern-day and 1990, with Aaryan as the lead for both.
In the present day track, the love in question is between Veer (Kartik Aaryan) and Zoe (Sara Ali Khan). The trailer opens with Zoe confronting Veer demanding to know why he's following her after refusing to sleep with her, which leads to start of a relationship. Zoe is a career woman, for whom her career is the most important thing. We know this because she says so quite explicitly in the trailer.
It's hard to make much sense of the plot from the trailer, but we see the customary romantic highs of blooming love between the two, until problems set in and cracks begin to form. Going by the trailer alone, it would appear that this new Love Aaj Kal is more of the same, aside from a clear attempt to appeal to the relationship problems of younger people.
Love Aaj Kal is Khan's third film after the romantic drama Kedarnath (2018) and masala entertainer Simmba (2018). For Aaryan, on paper, this would be his most off-centre, substantial choice yet as he's come to be known for a certain kind of crowd-pleasing comedies after last year's Lukka Chuppi and Pati Patni Aur Woh.
The trailer also features snippets of popular tracks from the earlier film like "Aahun Aahun" and "Twist". While that may suggest a remix, the same composer-lyricist of the earlier film, Pritam and Irshad Kamil have worked on the new Love Aaj Kal, so the ratio of remix to originality remains to be seen.
Produced by Imtiaz Ali and Maddock Films, the film releases on February 14th. You can watch the trailer below.
