In an interview with Hindustan Times, producer Boney Kapoor has said that Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn, is not unfinished. Kapoor said, "I recently showed some portions of the film to almost 300 people in Chennai, and they loved it. The film’s shoot is complete. However, extensive VFX work is underway, which is taking some time. Contrary to what reports suggest, the budget has not been exceeded."
A source close to the film's production team also told the portal, "Maidaan is a unique film with a long-lasting appeal. It is expected to gain momentum through word of mouth, much like Dangal (2016). Hence, we are taking our time to select the date and there’s no rush." As per the report, the film's makers are debating on whether to release Maidaan this year and compete with films like Tiger 3, Animal, Salaar: Part 1- Ceasefire and Dunki or wait till early next year.
Maidaan was announced in 2019 and was scheduled to be released in November 2020. However the pandemic caused massive delays in the film's production nd post-production schedule. The film's teaser was released in March 2023 and it was announced that the film would release on June 23. However, the date was postponed again and a new release date is yet to be announced by the makers.
Maidaan is a biographical sports drama that chronicles the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, the former coach of the Indian national football team. The movie is directed by Amit Sharma and also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao, and Rudranil Ghosh.
