At Netflix's Global Fan Event in São Paulo, Brazil, a massive crowd witnessed Zoya Akhtar’s new gang from the fictional town of Riverdale - The Archies. Agastya Nanda, Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Dot, Mihir Ahuja, Vedang Raina, and Yuvraj Menda appeared on stage as ‘Sunoh’ (the film’s Music Supervisor is singer-composer Ankur Tewari) played. While all seven are making their big debut, they are already mini-celebrities – popular star-kids Nanda, Kapoor, and Khan play characters based on Archie, Betty and Veronica respectively. The others, Ahuja (Jughead), Raina (Reggie), Menda (Dilton), and Dot (Ethel) have all gained following on Instagram for everything from singing to fashion. The actors channelled their characters from the coming-of-age film set in the 60’s, which is a live-action musical adaptation of the Archie Comics and will introduce Riverdale teenagers to a new Indian audience.
“Archie Comics is a group of iconic characters, that were created in 1941. They live in Riverdale. I’ve been enamoured to do something in India for many many years” said Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics. Akhtar is also producing The Archies with Reema Kagti under their Tiger Baby Films banner.
Archie Comics has been adapted several times since 1964, most recently, we have seen Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020), Katy Keene (2020), and Riverdale (2017-present). This time, Akhtar has set The Archies in the fictional Anglo-Indian hill-station called Riverdale.
The teaser was also unveiled at the TUDUM event, offering a glimpse into the life of seven friends from Riverdale in the year 1964, the era of rock and roll. The teaser featured the protagonists dealing with friendships, love, and heartbreaks.
Shooting for The Archies wrapped in December 2020 and the film is expected to release on Netflix later this year.
