Anil Sharma is the director of Gadar 2, the fifth highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and the eighth highest-grossing Hindi film of all-time, which among other things, announced the return of Sunny Deol’s handpump-uprooting masculinity. Sharma’s return to the world of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, which came out in 2001, showed that despite the two decade gap, some cinematic intuitions don’t dim. A relic of Hindi cinema of the aughts, Gadar 2 was nostalgia arriving with full force.
