Atlee is only five films old, but if numbers are what really matter, we should look at the hundreds of crores of rupees these films have raked in. His films may have a semblance of typical commercial entertainers, but he also makes the templates pulpy, palatable and overflowing with emotions that make you go with the flow of his storytelling. If he gave Vijay back-to-back hits with an emotional Theri, mass-ified Mersal and sealed it all with the Singapenne in Bigil, he did something bigger and braver with Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan – he gave the king the comeback throne Khan deserved and let the entire nation look on, in awe and surprise.
