The owner of Dharma Productions made his directorial return with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani after seven years. Its box-office success dispelled most doubts about the relevance of his larger-than-life Bollywood palette in a post-pandemic India. But the flashy romcom was more significant for Johar’s willingness to evolve – it doubled up as a colourful appraisal of the short-sighted family entertainers that once built the Johar brand.
